TopRC FW-190 Landing Gear Mod and others

I bought this plane a bit skeptical with the plan of using its wing for my Hyperion Dora. But after the first flight it was love at first landing.

I made like 20+ flights with her and now I decided it's time to giver her a pair of Marlene Dietrich legs.

From unboxing to maiden.

For the record:
This is a fine scale plane for her size.

The only 2 cons I've found are the legs and the paint. The latter was fixed using a generous layer of WBPU.

The legs were a challenge. I made some mistakes, but since I started all the process with one, the second was way much better.

The plastic retract support is so weak that I decided to use 2 pieces of 5x12x80mm hardwood rails to make a better one.
I carved grooves on the foam to accept the new supports.
Pre drill and attach the retracts, then hot glue it to the foam grooves.

The new legs give this plane a new look.
They are not perfect, but I learned a lot from one wing to the another.
The first took me 4 nights to think and complete and the 2nd only one.

The LG doors are made of 2mm PVC sheet, carefully heated to get them to shape and cover the wells. Attached to the legs with hot glue.

I hope this weekend I can test them.

Was it worth it? This plane is too pretty to leave her with those short legs.

Video of re maiden

The flight with the new legs went absolutely fantastic!

I was afraid of the CG being off, but everything was ok.

The take off was mach easier since I didn't worry about stones hitting the tail wheel and generating a nose over.

During the landing I noticed the most difference in behavior, the plane tracks more solidly and I could reduce the speed a lot. After touching down, the tail slowly sits as the speed is flared.

I really liked it!

I will get a new material for the wheel doors to make them more accurate to scale.

Hi Tartago,

Could not agree more, this a beautiful plane to fly, but the undercarraige is just all wrong!
Even after a close to perfect landing, and then still a nose over is never a good thing.
Really enjoyed your modification, but I decided not to move the retracts after some of your warnings and decided on a slightly different approach.
I moved the wheels forward and towards the centre of the wings as far as I could, then made new, longer struts, replacing the original 2.5mm spring steel with 3mm spring steel.
Also then strengthened the wheel wells with some balsa beams.
The wings are now even stiffer than than in the as-bought kit.
Put a forward bend in the steel struts just after they exit the rectract gear.

Took her up this morning and the landing was perfect, even on the slightly longer grass. No more nosing over, so very pleased.
As you know, it's never an easy thing, getting out the knife and starting to hack chunks of foam off new model, but very pleased it worked out here.
After a few more flights, I will make new doors and fit them.

Well done Flyer!

It's a good mod to avoid massive foam surgery and the objective of avoiding nose overs is met.

I really like this plane an I was bleeding on the short legs.
