All the problems stemmed from the fact that the 2.4 system could not extend range without having the external antenna on the tx and rx at the very least.

I wonder if they looked into the solutions other than a speedier plane?

how do these fpv guys do it?

they wasted $1,000's grading that bogus runway

Ah, maybe it was. I wasn't paying all that much attention. I'll go watch it again, without all the distractions.

This had to be the most egregious newbie error I've ever seen on a project involving numerous scientists / engineers.

I won't even launch my slopers with less than a 75 yard range check. What the hell were they thinking? If 2.4GHz doesn't work, go back to a 72MHz system and use extendable whip antennas on both the Tx and Rx links. Unbelievable. . .

The planned chase plane was grounded due to fuel pump issues. They were forced to a back up plane which proved marginal during testing (thus the switch). Since the permit from the Mexican government was due to expire that day they were forced to go or drop the entire project.

I thought the same thing on the range, especially since they said there was a city about 4 miles downrange. Did you notice one of the engines went to full power after the crash? I was wondering what would happen if all 3 went to full power, that was very dangerous, but very cool to watch

It's aired on Discovery Channel and Science Channel. Check your local listings for reruns.

Yeah, watched it again, can't even believe I thought for a second it was a 12Z. I'm obviously an idiot, haha! You can plainly see that it's an 8FG.

I was really surprised they went ahead with it using the Cessna. With such a short range, it seemed like any tiny problem with the Skymaster could have put them out of radio control range with no way to catch up and regain control of the 727.

Maybe there were just trying to (over)dramatize everything. Hard to believe there wasn't some sort of fail safe to keep the 727 from running away.

They had no choice. Their permit issued by the Mexican government was going to expire that day. The Cessna while not the preferred option was the only option at that point.

Well, they had a choice not to do it at all if safety was really a factor (that and spending a good amount of time in a Mexican jail if something had gone wrong). Which is what makes me thing the situation wasn't really so dramatic as that.
