Carbon Fiber Landing Gear

Hi All,

Anyone ever lay-up their own carbon fiber main landing gear?

I'm looking to make a one-piece to replace a 10-12 lb kit's aluminum gear.

- Fabric weight?
- how many plys?
- type epoxy resin used?
- worth the work?

Never understood carbon gear.

why not fibreglass?

Someone might have better ideas than me, but your looking at a lot of money, time, and effort.

But! It could be done. You could make a quick mold from an existing gear. I'd use some 3k plain weave, and maybe some uni as well... You'd want some layers on the bias as well, for side loaded landings.

But carbon's not flexible enough to absorb any energy?

Do you have the kit's metal LG? If so, you can wax and lay up straight onto the for a 'mould'.

Other q's:
How many plys, and of what weight, are entirely up to you. How heavy can the part be, how rigid does it need to be? Multiple layers tend to perform better, so don't get a very heavy cloth.

What resin: Any laminating resin. Unfortunately, the more $$, the better they are to work with

Worth the work - unless it's a particularly strange aircraft, not really. Especially if you don't have the wax, pva, resin etc already. Set up costs can outstrip the component cost by a factor of 10 for small pieces like that.

My carbon U/C's were always way too stiff. Kevlar is better but it's a sod to process (cut / sand) post cure.

my glass only units have been the best compromise

I would build them from glass as well. Glass is tougher, has better strain properties, and better at absorbing impact than carbon.

If you don't have all the materials then the cost of making one will be rather higher. It would be cheaper to just go buy one.

I have made quite a few now. From 2M F3A up to 3.2M IMAC. Had 1 failure due to not wrapping the uni carbon with cloth. This stops delamination. I have done build logs of these on FG username Rod.

Hi Sorry there is no thread dedicated to UC building. Each project has molded carbon gear and the process is imbeded in that thread. Have just had a look at the Miro F3A thread and here is the page with the UC build.
