Quick! Someone try to talk me out of it, my throwing arm is ready

Dont know if the force will be to much for the wing/fuse where it sticks together as an F5D weighs much more then a F3K ship... but could work ,,,,, and isnt there some extra reinforcments in the wing where you hold the plane ?

Good points, an F5D airframe is a lot stronger then an f3k model also, so it might manage the stress just fine. I'd be reinforcing the wing tip before I try! Will be adding some fin area also.

How many people think I'm crazy for even thinking this?!?

think its a pretty good idea as you get a hard throw , this way you would avoid those torques when you hit the throttle as the plane will be high in air.... but there is always an,, IF...

throwing it right handed might put into a snap with the power on it could roll violently

Launch would be with power off I'd imagine. Already thought of reverse running props to counter throw induced roll if necessary.

Would this style launch be permitted in the f5d rules?

I have done it once and would not recommend to anybody,experienced or not.
Have to say ,I been practicing DLG launches,with DLG planes, since 1997 ,so not a beginner in technique.
Totally different behavior for F5D plane ,for many many reasons.
I will mention just one- all F5D planes have about 3 times smaller vertical tail then regular DLG plane which makes huge difference in stability of the frame on launch.
Otherwords,instead of going straight after leaving Your hand,plane spins horizontally .
....but it brings more spice to whole flying event

Real reason im asking is im looking into more efficient launching techniques, and a discus launch is by far the most powerful type of hand launch.

Lets just say, im working on my own F5D airframe, if I take discus launching into account during the design process DO you guys think it would be possible to work.

I have experience with only one F5D airframe - my Viper. First I flew it on 4S, now on 5S. A baby could launch the Viper. It flies right out of your hand. You don't even need to throw it. Unless the Viper is some kind of mysterious exception and all other F5D ships launch poorly, I don't understand why you would need to get creative on the launch and invent a new technique.

faster off launch = less heat time...

Launch is the slowest part of a race.. if you can shave 1 or 2 seconds off (from standstill to race speed), then it is worth it. You would need to modify the vertical stab, ever tried discus launching a glider with no vertical stab below the boom? The model rolls over.. It possibly could work, but then the added drag from the larger vertical stab might negate the launch advantage by slower course speed.

Just my opinion... I'm certainly no expert.
