Progress so far

Well, removed the hull from the shadows last night, and they came out quite easily (I did wonder if they would !).

Did a quick clean up internally followed by a sanding, and then got a sealer coat on the internal surfaces as soon as I could. The hull had not sprung apart, so the temporary balsa cross bracing and the external epoxy coating had kept the shape.

Weight so far is 180g.

Internal glassing follows tonight.

I agree,West System is a system so they have the complete package of the application of what you might be doing.They are many epoxy manufactures but they dont seem the carry the additives as West does.

Thanks guys....this has been the easy bit for me, as I do have traditional "balsa bashing" experience from many years of aircraft modelling..fitting out will be getting into more uncharted areas

Ref West...yep, sure you are right. I just couldn't source it out here, and I couldn't find any supplier who would airfreight.

In the end I used micro balloons...which are fine, but leave the surface a little milky in appearance. I'm going to paint the hull anyway, so no great shakes.

The internal glassing is now finished, and I have been really impressed at the strength that it has imparted to the hull.

Any thoughts as to a target weight for the hull (without fittings) ?

Really nice job of planking. Looks a very sleek hull and will be stiffer than a pure glass hull.

Your bow treatment is especially nice method and results show it off well. Pity to paint it and put a deck over it. ;-)

What is your weight with glass both sides?

My Vektor, fiberglass hull/deck weighed 525 gms bare.
With radio trays and paint primer, I was at 606. Paint added 6gm and clear coat another 9gms.

The finished boat is under weight by about 85 grams, but that is a bit over what the newest builds are coming in at. My Lintel needed 165 gm corrector weights.

I read where Pikanto's were about 600 gms for hull/deck only.

Coolmob: I did think about staining and leaving the hull unpainted, maybe next time. The planking method seems to have worked okay...I cut the planks by using a 1 metre steel rule clamped to the 10mm x 3mm planks (with a support) on my building board so that they could taper down to almost nothing.

Hew..thanks for the input. My hull in its present state is 480g. I'll need to be carefull with the outfitting to keep the weight down. In retrospect I could have used lighter glass cloth in the internal covering, but the hull is really rigid, and minimal formers and bracing will be required.
My rudder is very light CF coming in at 45g. Hopefully all will be okay in the end.

The boats that I sell come in about 630 with a cockpit and under 600 with a flat deck.

Thanks Mike. Yes, very helpfull. I'm going to have to be carefull here on in to keep the weight within reasonable margins it seems.

Just had a look at your lovely IOM's...no doubt a better starting point than building from scratch, but I'm learning lots of lessons !
