Help!
Best 0.46 cu. in. Nitro Engine?

Hello All,

I've been comparing a lot of .46 cu. in. engines (OS, ThunderTiger, Magnum, ASP, etc.) They all have comparable power output (1.4-1.6 hp), but big variations in price. Any recommendation on the best performing engine? And what about your recommendation makes it the best?

I love the os 46ax or fx. They run pretty reliably and are very easy to tune, run well rich. I had a thunder tiger 40 that was nice enough as well. had good luck with mags too! If I were gonna get another 46, I'd get - 46 ax if going used. magnum 46 if going new (as they are a lot less and have a good rep.) they are all going to weigh about the same, turn similar props with similar power. I bet if you cowled an engine and swapped my os with a magnum, TT ..... I wouldn't even know the difference.

Jett Engineering Sport Jet .46 wins this contest hands down. But yet you pay for the performance in cost. Mine will turn a 10x6 prop at 16K all day long on the ground. In the air it unloads to around 17K or so. It's a "piped" engine so I wouldn't use it for 3D type flying, but for eveything else you can't beat it. If your cost conscious then it's not for you. But if you have ~$300 burning a hole in your pocket...

I had an ASP 46 pass through my hands. I ran it on the bench with 10% nitro fuel and APC 12 x 6 prop. It hurt my ears to the point that I shut it down. I haven't experenced anything like that since I ran Control Line Rat Race engines without ear muffs.

Kind of depends on what you want out of it, and what your putting it in. An engine good for a 3D plane, will probably not be near as good for a high speed jet.

Thanks for the responses everyone. iAlex, I did see Jett, and I also saw their price. However, I couldn't find its power output anywhere on their site.

Roto Rob, speed is not really a desired characteristic for this project.

Hutchinstuff, by following your advice, I would probably go with the TT or magnum based on other threads that I've read--about the same performance but a lot lighter on cost.

Do any of you advise gear reduction if I want to get ~8lbs of thrust from any of these engines? (Assuming a 11 x 6 prop)

Manufacturer's rated power output is to be taken with a grain of salt.

IMO, the best deal going is the TT46 engine: OS quality without the ridiculous parts prices.

jeffie that's a pretty convincing vid. haha.

What's the weight of that plane btw? And anyone have thoughts on gearing?

I wouldn't gear any glow motors. The prop and pitch are the gears. You could go like a 12-4" or 13"-4" for the same effect.

This one is running an 11X6 MA 3 series prop with great results. Fuel is a 15% custom blended break in mix. Havent weighed the plane combo but its a little heavy in my opinion however the TT46 pulls it very nicely.

Jett doesn't list the power output on his website. When it comes to horsepower calculations of our small glow engines it is more a question of who can stretch the truth the best. But with the Jett he does say that with a 10x6 APC prop and powermaster 15% fuel a Sport Jett .46 will achieve 16,500 RPM. This is what I found with my .46. Using the same fuel and prop I was able to peak my engine at 16,500 RPM on the ground.

My Top Flight Contender is a blast to fly with this engine.

Some day I will win the lottery and buy some Jett engines. Rich uncle maybe.
OK so I am a cheapskate.
Maybe I can talk them into sending me a test engine, it has happened before.LOL

I have two thunder tiger 046 and one OS and the thunder tiger engines out perform the OS and have held up well
