Help!
Budget Transmitter

Hi,

i'm trying to find a good but not too expensive transmitter/receiver couple for my xcopter. I bought the HobbyKing HK6S [1] which seems to have non-linear outputs [2]. Either way, HK says itself (which i didn't read before), that the transmitter is designed for fixed wing only. I need some transmitter that is more or less in the same price range (~30€ - 60€) but ideally with some option to change configuration and mostly for controlling my quad.

Does anybody have a recommendation for me?

regards.

[2]: How did i find this out? Well, i connected the transmitter to my soundcard and started the simulator crrsim, where i was able to receive the transmitter signals (at least i was able to change the six channels indepently). But moving the channel handles, i saw, that they were not balanced at all (the trim didn't help either) and it seemed, they were non-linear.

If you can afford it, get the Turnigy 9x. Its a decent radio stock, and has an upgrade path to make it a really great radio that will grow with you and do just about anything you'll ever need.

Thank you both. I've looked up the turnigy 9x and it seemed to cost more than 100€, which i think is a little bit too high a price. The Flysky T6 seems to be what i need, but how does it compare to the Flysky CT6B? One has an lcd display, the other doesn't. So, which one allows for more detailed settings?

Turnigy 9X is only about 54 bucks and it's in stock right now. With module, 8ch receiver and everything. Sure, shipping costs a bit, but it's worth it. The transmitter can be modded in a number of ways to make it better than many other transmitters ten times as expensive.

"Special offer" it says, hurry!

And yes, I know, Mode 1. But all you need to do is open it, move a tension bar and spring then set it to mode 2 in the settings menu. This is a fantastic price.

The problem with the cheaper radios is that they have no form of failsafe. Generally what this means is that if you go outside of radio range the model will continue with its last known commands.... the model is likely to fly away.

With something like a Turnigy 9x and a Frsky module you can set a failsafe whereby you can set a command for the model to follow in the event of signal loss. ie throttle reduction. It will drop compared to flying off into the distance never to be seen again. A cool thing about the Frsky module is that it beeps at you when the reception signal starts getting low.

So, i just placed an order on the turnigy 9x and am hoping that it arrives shortly as i'm growing impatient with my current remote.

Speaking about range: what range should i be expecting?

going the 9X way will make you very happy! it's the best system for the money if you flash ER9X firmware on it!

you already ordered it? hmm.. you should order a backlight for it to and a life tx battery pack. (rhino1500mAh for instance)

i really really love my (ER)9X. it makes high end transmitters 4X the price of the 9X weep in shame on behalf of the ease of use and great software. there's nothing you can't program in it once you flashed it to ER9X.

range? i never brought my model further away than 3/4 of mile, but i know dudes who flown about a mile (FPV) with the stock transmitter and reciever.

but if you want more range and telemetry and such the ER9X is ready for it!

You should easily get 2km or so out of it, but since it does not have failsafe in the standard setup you should stay close to begin with. After that, add an FrSky JR module with telemetry, get a 1500mah LiFE tx lipo and a backlight.

Maybe you should place another order right now, the Life pack is cheap and the backlight too. I think the Life pack is a MUST HAVE, the stock battery holder is crap and my transmitter turned off itself many many times until I replaced the battery holder with a proper LiFE tranxmitter pack. A transmitter that turns off itself if you jerk it back and forth a bit is not safe.

i saw some backlights for the 9x on ebay [1], but do i really need it at the beginning??

About flashing: Are there any manuals on how to flash it? Do i need a special connection?

Also, can i use the 9x for a simulator like crrsim?

nah you don't really need the backlight in the beginning, but if you open up the 9X to flash it's handy to put the backlight in since you have it open already.

how to and possibilities of the ER9X frimware are te be found in the wiki and the forum.

Yes, turnugy 9x is the best you can get at your budget. I bought a 6Ch dig. prop. system before that and it was quite difficult to set the trims accurately (thanks to the analog trims). You'll need to connect it to your pc everytime you want to change some settings.
I like turnigy 9x now. Just flash it with er9x firmware and you'll have a good Tx, upgrade it with FrSky module and you'll have a GREAT Tx.
