Palestinians: UN recognition would foster peace with Israel

Quote:
The Palestinians fended off on Tuesday U.S. criticism of their bid for upgraded status at the United Nations, saying the move would improve prospects for a peace accord with Israel, not damage them.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday, saying he is ready to resume talks with Israel if he succeeds in obtaining UN recognition for the Palestinians.
Having a recognised state would seem to give the Palestinians more of an equal footing in peace talks. Mutual recognition of each state within it's respective recognised borders would be a good starting point.

UNITED NATIONS—The Palestinian Authority said it planned to hold a vote in the U.N. General Assembly this month to make it an observer state, in defiance of retaliation threatened by the U.S. and Israel, which say the move would undermine resumption of peace talks.

...

Hamas, which rules Gaza, doesn't agree that going to the U.N. is a useful exercise.

The main immediate danger to Israel seems to be that Palestine may be able to take them to the International Criminal Court.

Indeed. At least 130 Palestinians killed so far.

I'm glad no-one was killed in that incident.

(Reuters) - France on Thursday indicated it would support efforts by the Palestinians to secure a diplomatic upgrade at the United Nations in a quest for greater international recognition.

Israel is negotiating with the United States over the wording of the proposal at the UN General Assembly Thursday that would upgrade the Palestinians to observer status.

Britain could support Palestinian bid at UN as support for PA

Quote:
Israel wants clauses stating that the Palestinians will not ask to be accepted as members of the International Criminal Court in the Hague; membership would let the Palestinians push criminal charges against Israelis. Also, Israel wants a clause stressing that this is a symbolic decision that grants no sovereignty over the West Bank, Gaza Strip or East Jerusalem.
Now we clearly see what objections Israel has to the Palestinians upgrading their status at the UN.

"... According to the Wall Street Journal, the draft lacks any mention of a construction moratorium in Israeli settlements ..."

Now we clearly see that Palestinians objections to return to the negotiating table were simply excuses.

What are the chances of Israel both agreeing to stop all building works at the illegal settlements, and stopping all building work, when they have never done so in the past?

First, I can acknowledge that the status of the land ownerships of some of the settlements are disputed, but I can't agree with the term "illegal", however, since the Palestinian Authority have never made such a condition to past Israeli governments, and since its not a condition of the new UN initiative, the chances are irrelevant.

Ok, suffice to say they are illegal according to the international community, the UN, and the International Court of Justice, but you and Israel disagree.

What ''objections'' were you referring to here?

The chances are it's not a condition of the UN initiative, because the chances of it happening prior to any negotiations taking place are more or less non-existent, as has proved to be the case in the past.
