Two Eagles

Well we went to the fest and launched for a fly. Unfortunately there is still a control problem unless it is just just a VERY slow responding model. We had a quick flight all caught on video ( which I am waiting to recieve and will post it when it comes). We had a crash landing but suffered only minor damage. Mainly I broke off a wing tip. It will fly again I am sure.
So here is a photo of our two Eagles at the fest, the other one was a completely home design made out of coreflute (correx) weighing in at 4.5kg which is twice as heavy as mine. He has done a fantastic job and it looks great. They are approx the same size but his body is a lot fatter. He did not have a sucessfull launch and still has some fine tuning to do but hopefully it will be in the air again at next years slope fest.

great pics , yes it is a slow responding model, you really need to think ahead, start your turns long before it really reacts and begins turn, it reminds me of a rudder and elevator ship. need to let it slide a bit through the corners. too bad the other wasn't airworthy yet.
the wing tips seem to be the weakest part of the design. on my eddie, every time he lands other then nose to the wind he flips and breaks a tip feather or two.

Flying Video

I:Manilla Videomanila 21st100MEDIAEllie Eagle (0 min 33 sec)
Here is the video I was waiting for.It definately shows PILOT ERROR as I have since read that if you hold the aileron in too long then it will go into a spin, exactly what happened.
Andrew

SORRY TRY THIS INSTEAD.

Very nice video, I felt myself cringing every time one of the Birds went down, I know that feeling. Had some of the same issues with my pterodactyl that your buddy is haveing with his design. and hearing the crunch of your eagle when it went in(ouch ) , i hope the damage was not as bad as it sounded.

Only minor damage to mine, broke 1 tip feather off. The noise was more the dry shrub that it went into.

Hi,
I would really like to give this one a try since I'm starting to cut foam wings and since the only foam I can get here is styrofoam yours seems to be the closest match.
I just ordered the plans and I'm not sure if you follow this thread any longer but I'd like to ask you a couple of questions if you still around and have time.
Ok, one of them was already answered as I read the thread again, which was what did you use over the foam, so thin glass and epoxy it is...
The other one is if you remember how much was the flying weight.

It seems like she flew better in the first video than in the second one so if you managed to fine tune it and don't mind sharing any tips about aileron throws or anything else is apreciated too.
Thanks,
Fernando

I am starting to build my own.

How do you make the main spar strong enough ?

I mean, isn't this wood spar going to break at the first launch when one is looking for the best COG .

Some auto-pilots like the APM very simply limit banks to maximum allowed angles, which you decide and input into the system.

That may be a "nice to have" for those birds

Spar

philgib I never had any problems with the spar, I have had some hard landings and it has never had an issue with the spar, Just make sure the grain of the wood is running the length of the spar. The weak point is the tip feathers as they will break if your bird flips after landing. As for the Best CG mine was good as per the plans.

Same here. C of G as stated is good. Have not broken the spar yet and it is as per plan. Hopefully in the next couple of days my eagle will see some air time. It is time to go to the Manilla Slope Fest ( Australia) and join about 100 other pilots over a week have a whole heap of fun. I will keep you up dated on the flight.

Unfortunately the wind was just a little too strong to fly the Eagle at Manilla Slope Fest this year. Looks like I will save it for next year.

Success !!!

Well another Manilla Slope Fest has come again and this time it was time to give Ellie her wings. The wind was right, well maybe a bit stronger than needed and a decision was made to toss her off the mountain. This time I knew what to expect as far as flying characteristics and as predicted she flew just perfect. What a sight to behold. The lift was incredible and I run out of down trim. The TX was handed over to another flyer to enjoy whilst I played with the trims and got her settled down. Handed back again for some gentle flying and deliberatley held in aileron to show the BAD characteristics of this bird as we had plenty of height. Pulled out of death dive sucessfully and more gentle flying was had.
Suddenly she rolled over for no reason and went into the death dive. Oppersite control applied with little effect, but some. Terminal velocity took over and it was all over ( from a great height). A long trek down the cliff and with the help of a lost model alarm I found I found and retrieved the wreckage.
I believe a mechanical malfunction of an aileron clevis caused aileron to become disconnected and the drag plate most likely grabed the air and held the aileron in place to produced the spin and death dive.
Now that I have looked over the wreckage I believe a rebuild is possible despite my initial response of a total loss. Time will tell I guess.

Rebuilding has begun.

Well I couldn't just let her sit there in a broken state of disrepair any longer. I have begun the slow process of rebuilding her for another flight. She flew so well and looked so good in the air that I just had to get her in the air again. There will be some alterations to the design this time round as I will put servos directly into the wing in front of the ailerons. I also will glue down the air brakes so they will no longer be used ( not that I got a chance to use them before). They broke pretty badly in the crash and really were a pain to connect before flight anyway. A new head is currently being glued together before being shaped. The one thing I'm not looking forward to is the air brushing of the feathers, it was a huge job the first time around.
