BlackJack DLG

Hi All

As a companion to the Karisma DLG thread, and because I make reference to it in that thread, I thought it necessary to provide some detail on the BlackJack DLG.

This is the second of the 2 DLG's that I offer for sale. It is a more conventional design with a root chord of 175mm and a wing area of 2156cm2 (334 in2).

This wing is an adaptation of Gerald Taylor's Zone V2 reference design to make it suitable for solid core bagging. It uses 4 panels per side to get quite close to the ref design planform. XFLR5 analysis indicates that theoretical performance should be close to the original design.
FWIW, the wing is not merely a copy of the reference design. It was optimised seperately with what I guess were similar priorities to Gerald's when he designed the reference wing, so it could probably be classified as a launch and run design. However, with typical flying weights of 250g, it floats very well.

I have never even seen a Fr3aK (the reference design) in the flesh, let alone flown one, so I cannot offer any comparisons with the BlackJack. I can say that the BlackJack has been well received by pilots in South Africa, also none of whom have flown a Fr3aK, but some of them do fly other high end DLG's (Stobel, concept, Steig etc).

The BlackJack is available at US$340 plus shipping, which is in the region of US$50 to the USA.

BTW, I do not accept payments with orders. Anyone who is interested in obtaining a plane can place an order and payment will be requested when it is ready for shipping.

I know the BlackJack a lot better than the Karisma as I have very limited time on the Karisma. I have been plagued by bad weather for the last couple of weeks. I will be posting a lot more on the flying characteristics of the 2 planes after I return from our F3K nationals on the weekend of 22/23 Sep.

What I can tell you for now is that the descriptions of the flying characteristics of the Fr3aK sound very similar to what I have experienced with the BlackJack. This is not surprising as the 2 wings are very similar (one bagged and the other moulded) The moulded Fr3aK will have an edge on performance, but by how much will have to wait until someone can fly both planes.

Wing areas are BackJack - 2156cm2(334in2) and Karisma - 1925cm2(298in2)

I have never flown the P2. As far as I know, they have never been imported to South Africa, so I probably will never fly one.
Most DLG's are pretty easy to fly. Whether you like this one will depend on what you are looking for.

Actual shipping time to Europe should be 5 to 10 days and should cost about US$50 for individually shipped planes.

Some comments are probably in order regarding the plane shown in this picture.

This is a prototype plane and the BlackJack is not normally available in full carbon. It is much more costly to produce and does not offer and significant advantages.

The yellow colour has been added by Johann and is not available as standard.

So is the tape holding it together!

All jokes aside,
The pod is not Graham's standard production one either!
The latest pods are really nice!

Or you can send me both, and not only will I compare the blackjack to the Fr3aK but I can compare the blackjack to other $300-$500 airframes!

I have received a Blackjack and will be doing some flight test reporting and side by side testing. I have to say that I'm highly impressed with the quality of work. The fuselage is absolutely a work of art. I look forward to getting this in the air.

Thanks Tom.

I am obviously also very keen to hear what you think of the flying characteristics.
