Adhesives for ABS Plastic

Found a Tug kit that has an ABS platic hull in a freind's
model stash, and would like to build it, but not familiar with
adhesives used for wood to ABS joining. Said he would make
me a heck of a deal if I wanted the kit. It is the Artesiania Latina
Amsterdam. What would a fair price for this kit be, he has assembled
the keel parts only, kit is complete.

Bill,

You can use epoxy, thick CA, or Gorilla Glue for wood to styrene based on what you have around as well as your preference. If he’s a food friend and you’re interested in that particular kit, I’d say it’s worth a BBQ and some beer at your place, or what ever he’d like to get out of it, or what you are ok with paying. Started kits don't typically do very well unless they are extremely rare or have complicated fitting kits.

We BBQ together quite often, as for the beer, neither one of us drinks, but I did offer him $75 for the kit, said he'll sleep on it.

Never had much luck with epoxy on ABS before in my aircraft assembling, guess it's time to finally try the Gorila Glue.

There has to be a build thread here, I would start there and see how they went about it. You will also get an idea of what you face in the build and solutions to and issues that may arise. I just used lock tight 5 minute epoxy last night for wood to styrene but it was for a large flat surface to reinforce a transom, I was the clamp and it worked quite well.

Hi, make sure you prep the hull first or the glue will not stick.

My Happy Hunter is made of ABS plastic and when I built her, I used Stablit Epoxy to start off with. Later as I progressed through the model and for repairs I use(d) gap filling CA. I don't have any issues with the CA sticking, but as most of us find with our models, most of the stuff that comes off or breaks is because of my own carelessness or accidents in moving her around, not the CA not working

Did a little research into the G/Flex Epoxy, looks very promissing, just need to get some on order if my friend accepts my offered or we come to an acceptable agreement on price for the kit.

ABS to Wood

My choice would be GORRILLA CA, not, the regular Gorrilla Glue. Rough it up with about 180 grt. sandpaper, and it should stay great. That is also what I would use for all the wood joints. Even started, that kit is probably worth $200, or more. CB

Comes up at regular intervals. Graupner recommend "Uhu Hart" which is basically Balsa Cement for wood to ABS.

If you're gluing ABS to ABS or to Polystyrene (NOT foam) sheet, MEK (Ketone) is a solvent and will weld the bits together, just be careful not to have it running all over.

Regards Ian.

I used G-Flex to join a wood deck to an ABS hull on this old tug. Worked great.

How about ABS pipe cement? Might be messy though.
