variometer for detecting thermals

how do you know when your plane is in a thermal?
by eye?
when the plane is overhead-on close to it-it is hard to see if it is climbing or sinking. or at altitude.
could be convenient to have a variometer that tells us if the plane is changing altitude by a tone that goes to higher-or lower-pitch, or by showing the figures on a screen?
i rather would favor tone, as it is hard to watch the plane and then looking at the screen and back to the plane-that is, if you can find it.
if so, what sensitivity we need? like 10 cm per second, or what?
has anybody any experience with this, or knows of a thread that already exists?
