The wife and I spent the weekend in Toledo, OH at the annual Toledo Antique and Classic Boat Show. This years show was held at a new venue - the Toledo Yacht Club. The TYC has fixed piers to moor the boats, with a long drop to the water; so I didn't get to demonstrate my models in the water. Show set up was Friday afternoon, with a "Welcome to the Show" cookout on the S.S. COL. JAMES M.SCHOONMAKER, formerly the S.S. WILLIS BOYER. Registration fees also covered lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

There were some new and interesting boats displayed this year: a Higgins cruiser; Hackercraft 30' runabout; a Lyman speed skiff; and a cottage racer.

Some more pictures of boats on the shore.

I saw few members of the Maumee Valley Model Boat Club at the show. Guys - bring your boat models and display them at the show. I got about 10 questions each day asking about a local model boat club. I also got about 20 questions each day asking if my models were for sale, or if I would do commission work.

Nice stuff Bob. What RCG needs is the ability to play audio clips. Nothing like the sound of one of those old wood brutes fired up and getting on plane.

I like the unrestored Dart and the Wooden Nickle my self.

Probably the unrestored Dart, which has an interesting history. It was apparently used for racing at one time; then became a rumrunner, and was seized by the USCG and used against rumrunners. The Lyman speed skiff is also an interesting boat.

Views: 66 My scratch built Hacker 16' Gentleman's Runabout, and the Legend Boat Models Lyman and Dodge. Views: 64 Views: 60 I got the Lyman's OH registration numbers and stern graphics from Callie Graphics. The anchor and carpenter's square is the old Revenue Cutter Service rating badge for Ship's Carpenter, which is now Damage Controlman in the USCG. Views: 56 I had the Dodge opened up so visitors could see inside. Views: 39 Ragtime RIck and the Chef's of Dixieland provided music on Saturday afternoon. We were in front of the band stand. Views: 40 Dr. Jazz and the Downhome Boys provided more jazz on Sunday. Views: 41 All boats and cars registered for the event had info sheets nearby - here on the seat, some taped to the window. Views: 49 The Fireball 50 on her trailer; hull is painted orange. Views: 43 No hinges or handles on the engine hatch. The owner used the air scoop as a handle to lift the hatch out. Views: 44 From the stern, the Fireball 50 resembles a Crackerbox. Views: 45 Starboard quarter shot, interesting shape on the bronze rudder. Views: 35 The owner said the exhaust was salvaged form an old Matthews boat. Views: 41 Gator leather upholstery - might be hard to duplicate in 1:6 - 1:10 scales. Views: 44 Views: 35 Views: 38 Very simple dash.

The white tent on the left was for the marine mart vendors selling nautical junque. I could have set my model display in there. Views: 21 A nice catboat was one of the few sailboats there.... Views: 23 ...unless you count those that need really hard water. The Toledo Ice Yachting Club had a nice display of blade runners. I'm considering duplicating the barn find finish on a Chris Craft utility boat model. Views: 22 GLEAM is a 30' Hackercraft. Views: 22 Another shot of GLEAM. One comment I heard about her was that you could launch a plane of her deck because she's so long. Views: 21 Views: 17 Views: 20 The owner of this Lyman is working on the Legend Boat Models Lyman and was picking my brain all weekend. He said he only has four planks on the hull. Views: 21 Views: 21 A suitable anchor to keep the paperwork from blowing away. Views: 18 HiJack in the water. These piers were designed for boats with more freeboard. Views: 17 We had "Lil Suzy", now we have "Lil Susie". Views: 21 The Dumas model is of a 16' version. The 17' version could be made by making longer keel, chine, and sheer pieces. Views: 19 Views: 21 I didn't get a photo of the data sheet, but this is a 1948 Higgins Cruiser. Views: 23 Views: 17 Named the "Andrew J." for Mr. Higgins himself.
