A couple videos I recently made at work.

First: Entering Indiana harbor with my barge empty.

BP Whiting (4 min 11 sec)

Second: Entering loaded with ~17' of draft.

BP Whiting 2 (3 min 30 sec)

Third: Leaving the next afternoon empty.

BP Whiting Outbound (2 min 36 sec)

All three were made with my GoPro Hero2 set to 30 sec intervals for pics viewed at a rate of .2 sec per pic via Windows Media Maker.

Fascinating! I'm amazed at how tight some of those passages seem to be. How is the opening of the bridges coordinated? Is it done electronically or?

We contact the bridges with a marine VHF radio. There's a guy standing by there. The person then contacts a dispatcher (if a rail bridge) who then gives the "OK" to open the bridge. Sometimes, the dispatcher doesn't like to give the OK (because they have trains to move) and you can be hanging out for some time. It can be extremely frustrating, because on our side of the coin, we figure the water was there before the bridge...and or a train can stop; a boat can't. Throw in some bad weather, darkness, tide/current and you can have yourself a real handful. One night, (not where those videos took place) I had to wait 45 min because bridge attendant went up the street to get some coffee.

No not really. I have a couple RC tug boats, but they don't get used/played much. Both are RTR jobbies. I spend atleast 6 months out the year on a boat...that's enough for me. Maybe when my son gets a little older. He's two now.

I hear ya.

Well, FWIW there are lots of folks in the Scale Boats forum who would just be happy seeing your videos and maybe still photos of your towboat and barge and other related stuff for use in their scale model building.

Do you get any type of "ground effect" from the banks/sides of the narrow sections to help center on those passages? great footage

What's kinda neat, when we pass though those bridges, the water pressure around the bow actually centers the barge. We only have about a foot on each side.

I know the video was time lapsed but it looked like you were going right into it considering the mass you had moving so I figured there was something like that going on.

You will have to stop by and say hi at NEAT
