Question
Charging rates based on "C" rating

I have heard many places that 1C is the preferred charge rate for most batteries. So does this mean if I have a 3S 2200 30c battery, I can charge it at 3amps.

All this "C" rating stuff has me confused, really just looking for the best charge rate for the batteries mentioned above..............................thanks

1C for 2200mah pack is 2.2A.

3A with todays packs should not be a problem if the pack is rated for charging at >2C.

C is based on the mah of the pack.

So C is based on the mah, meaning a 4S 3300 pack could be charged at 3.3A for a 1C charge rate and 6.6A at 2C charge rate. Is this correct??

Great, I believe I got it now. It does not matter if you are charging a 3 cell pack or a 6 cell pack, the charge rate is based on the mah of the battery.

The C rate quoted prominently on the pack is for discharge rate. So your 2200mAh 30C pack should be capably of comfortably delivering up to 66A if the motor demands it.

1C is the recommended rate for charging, unless it states on the pack (sometimes in the small print on the back, or sometimes on the manufacturer's web site) that you can go higher. Quite a few modern packs are capable of being charged at 5C, provided you use a balance charger, which means charge times of 12 minutes or less.

I just got some Turnigy NanoTech 45C batteries that state on them that they can be charged at 10C. So for a 1300mah battery that's 13A! Granted I don't really plan on trying that. I pretty much always charge at 2C or 3C if I'm in a hurry. Almost all batteries now can take more then a 1C charge rate without an negative effects on life.

Really the only down side to charging faster if you want to put the absolute most you can into your battery. The charge terminates when the current in the CV stage drops below 1/10 the initial rate. So if you charge at 2A it will terminate when the current drops to 0.2A. Double your rate and the charger will now stop at 0.4A, so a very few mah will not get put in that would otherwise have been. However since people are starting to find that slightly undercharging leads to better life maybe that's a good thing.
