Mocked up for the camera. Will take apart and thread lock everything. I still have all the electrics to go in there. So far quality seems good, even the main gear is free from wobble.

Mine is running an align drive train and it sounded exactly like an align helli I have now slotted the tail drive mountings so I can mesh the gears as I like is now very quiet does not sound like align at all anymore .

Here are a few pictures of the motor installation using the Lynx Heli motor mount and the frame modification to allow use of the T600 "fatty" motor for those who haven't seen it already.

Meshy!

I didn't realise that Lynx mount had separate rails. Do they make it easier to adjust the gear mesh?

With a 15t pinion, you probably have strong 6s packs, since the HS will be up to 2500.

Yes the whole assembly can slide for and aft, the pinion is an Align one. The kit is supplied with a 16 tooth pinion so I've gone down a tooth for the 1400 KV motor.

Neat! Anything that makes setting gear mesh easier is a great thing, and it makes up for the highish cost of the mount....

I think the 16t supplied with the kit must be aimed at 1100kv motors, with which it would give about HS2200. The equivalent for a 1400kv motor would be a 13t - so go easy on your first flights and watch your temps!

Edit: in fact Align supply a 16t with their 1220kv motor, which would give about HS2400, so your Fatty motor will be OK, just need to watch the packs!

I think I'll be picking up a 13 tooth pinion before the fist flight, The 15 tooth I had in stock from my 600 build, Align pack them in pairs.

Edit: I have now ordered a 13 tooth pinion, should have it Saturday cheers 2Doggs

My 550 has flown. I wish I was able to say it was faultless but it wasn't. The head was perfect, the gains etc were fine and it felt very solid. The tail however is a different story. I'm using a Tarot ZYXs FBL controller. I have it mounted on its side on the side of the fuselage. Gyro set at 28 in HH mode and 71 in rate mode as per the instructions. All other settings currently at default so in theory should be fine. All servos set to 1520 digital. The tail servo is a Futaba S9254 and the ball is at 14mm from the centre. The instructions call for 13.5mm to 15mm, again in theory all should be good. Head speed is set @ 2100 in normal and idle 1 is 2250.

Upon lift off the tail feels very loose and swings left and right approximately 45deg each way. If I raise the gain on the tx I can get it to tighten up but the amplitude of the oscillation increases. I've tried moving the ball on the servo both in and out with little success. I even moved it to 10mm from the center at which point tail rotor control is lost. I'm beginning to wonder if my servo is reaching the end of its life and is struggling under load. I've had this happen before on my 500 with the same symptoms, albeit with a much lesser servo. I'm going to pick up a replacement servo in the hope it will resolve my problem. This Futaba 9254 is about 7 years old and has seen service on several helicopters and with 3 different gyros.

Hopefully I'll be able to report a clean bill of health after the next flight. Oh and the final fly in the ointment, one of my 5000mAh 6s packs has decided it's now a 5s pack and has a dead cell so come the end of the month I'll be buying a couple more of those too.

Glad the maiden went sort of OK....

If it was the servo on it's way out, you're lucky you caught it in time to avoid smashing up the heli you've waited so long for!

Have you used the ZYX side-mounted before? Shouldn't have anything to do with it, but you never know. Was it simply easier getting the servo leads to fit with it side-mounted?

Yes, first time side mounted. You're also correct re the wiring. I'm going to Fastlad in the morning to pick up one of these. I think this will do the trick. My 9254 has done well, they're only rated to 4.8 volts and the last model it was fitted to, it ran at 5.5 volts for about 18 months which probably hasn't helped. I accept all responsibility if this has shortened its life span. I've had good luck with Hyperion servos, in fact I have 3 DS20 FMD's on the cyclics.

Good place, Fast Lad, I stopped by there whilst in the UK this summer. wouldn't have found it without Sat Nav though! Looks like a good servo.

I'm like a kid in a candy store in there, it's about 40 minutes from home, slightly less if I go on the bike and ride like Casey Stoner. But it's probably safer to go by bike because I'm not likely to come home with Goblin shaped boxes under my arm.

Paul how did you find the tail drive umbrella gear bearing holder on yours any side to side play as I had.Mine flew perfectly with the XYZ-S right from the start gains set to 50% on the tx I like it so much I have now stripped the BL 251 and BL 451s from my X50 to fit in it.

Yes Gaz, there was a little sideways movement of the front torque tube gear. A drop of cyno on one half of the boom holder plastic moulding has sorted that out and the system runs as smooth as butter. I tried adjusting gains whilst testing mate, they were up and down like a brides nighty, strangely the higher the gain the less the tail wagged but I just couldn't altogether get rid of it. That's what leads me to believe my servo is on its way out.
