Taking stills from video

Just wondering what quality stills could come from a video. I'll be using a Sony NEX 5n. It would be great to just shoot video and then cherry pick the best stills out of it. Anybody do this?

quality will be 1080p which is quite low res....

even a 4k video camera is much lower than most cameras today.

it is much better to make a video from stills than a still from video

Up to 8 x 10, a 1280 x 720 video will be OK.
The pixelizations don't begin to get intrusive..

It depends on camera quality and then the print size if you do normal 8x10 or smaller you can do a descent job with the prints, but again it depends on the camera some will not do a great job other will surprise you.

Sure but mike the resolution cannot be any higher than 1080 1280x1080p which is like a 2mp camera.

Thanks for the responses.

Looks like I'll be fine using them for a decent bang-up job, but for anything important I'll switch to stills.

Best,

Tom

These were taken from a NEX-5 HD1080p video. They need a bit of photoshop work but are more or less ok for low res publication such as online.

Video captures are okay if you have no other choice but honestly I think they look pretty crappy and wouldnt use them unless I absolutely had to.

agreed. But unless you have a camera that can take stills while shooting video, not many other options in this case.

Can fix a lot of the issues in post if needed. Definitely not good enough for print other than newsprint. Web, can get away with it.

Most cameras that can take stills while recording do so at a lower res as well.

That is the problem. Anyone try this with the GH1? I have heard it can do full frame pics and video at the same time. So can a VS100 but that's a bit out of my price range.

Also, that's what makes "intervalometers" so popular, taking stills every whatever seconds. One post I saw commented that every 7 seconds seemed like the best compromise between getting "that one shot" and having to go through a $h_t load of pics.
But you'd need a separate cam for the FPV feed..

MK FC has a programmable trigger as does the APM (relay) which we've used with mixed success. I would love to try the GoPro with WiFi or EOS 5DmkII or mkII with wifi module. Direct control of the camera via wifi would be pretty cool, but also REAL expensive I think.

For now, just set it on auto and sort through the pics. A flight won't fill even a 2gb card unless you are using an NEX-7.

Side note, anyone been able to get liveview via HDMI working on the GH1 or any NEX?
