Cleaning dust from motors?

Hi brains trust,
Just wondering what is the consensus on cleaning motors?
I have some Hyperion Zs2213-22 motors that are covered in fine dust. (if anyone knows the north west of western australia you'll know how fine I mean) it's an almost talcum powder like red dust. It's made it's way in to the motors and I suspect bearings too.

I was thinking rinsing in distilled water and then using compressed air to blast out the excess water before drying them
in the sun for a day or two?

Any thoughts on the subject would be most appreciated.

Cheers

I would just use compressed air and a soft cloth to wipe them over Jesse. The bearings should be ok.

You're better off. I use bell-type motors that are exposed below. I am a bad pilot and whenever I make a midly hard landing, grains of sand go into the motor. The ferrous-containing sand particles stick between the motors and cause it not to rotate.

I ploughed my first quad into the ground filling three out of four motors with mud. I figured I had nothing to lose so rinsed the motors out with hot water, making sure to remove anything stuck magnetically. Afterwards I shook them dry and hosed them down with tri-flow oil, also shaking off any excess and then reassembled.

I am still using these motors months later and they are running great. Funny enough I think a couple of the motors actually benefited from the cleaning and oiling as they actually seem to run better then new.

Rising with water, blasting with air compressor, then dry with a hair dryer on full heat (not heat gun!) will do the trick. For your bearings, if they are gritty when you spin them, you may have to soak then in denatured alcohol in an ultrasonic cleaner to get them smooth again. Don't forget to apply bearing oil to the bearings.

.....this is fairly standard procedure for anyone running RC buggies. But sometimes WD40 works better, but there are 2 schools of thought around WD.

Thanks guys,
Yes the bearings are gritty so I might have to take the motors apart somewhat.
I also forgot to mention the the dust is red due to the iron so yes it sticks to everything metallic.
I'll try the wash and dry and see how I go
