Hello all
I finally got my tri up and running fpv today. Works well, but I'm having the problem mentioned above. Up close objects look fantastic, such as my hand. I assumed the lens focus, but extensive twisting produced no improvement.

Has to be the lens. Does it change length when twisting?

It changes length, I can get fore/back ground in/out of focus, but the med/long range always looks a bit weird. As if slight double images or something. Not sure what it is. It makes fpv object recognition difficult.

You may have a lens element out of place. Do you have another to try?
Can you post a small video?

I just have the one lens currently. I don't have a capture device, but I do have an EasyCap. I just took a video to show. In processing the quality degraded somehow. Not sure if the issue shows up. Outdoors long distance its more noticeable.
In this video I shoot my hand, which looks very crisp at the time. However, the "W" on the card up on the wall in the far room looks a bit blurry, not pixelated as if the resolution ran out, but unclear. I twist the lens twice in both directions to show intentional out of focus, and finish with the best position.
Again, on my LCD my hand looks very crisp and vivid, even very small features, while the "W" remains unclear and blurred no matter where I focus the lens.

Any ideas?

I had the same issues.... you have to focus your lens outside....

with the Low lighting inside house, and looking at "fine" details of your hands close up, will result
in great images..... go outside and focus as best as you can.
As long as its not blurry and its to your satisfaction....go fly it.... :-)

Thanks for the interest. I did focus it outside with the same results. It's not unflyable, but I was expecting better given the resolution. Houses at the end of the street all look like blobs and it's impossible to differentiate them. Whereas objects smaller on the screen and closer are more clearly defined.
Is this just standard for this hardware?

The camera is not of highest quality nor are the provided lenses

If you try a 3.6 or even a 6 mm lense you will get better quality video

Focus at an object far away and try to read the say license plate, then screw in the lense
Recheck for focus as little screw can unfocused when you tighten

If you are stuck on the 2.8 expect poor results with lense

One lense I got with this camera if fuzzy around one corner but still fly able

When you do you ground tests like in the video move actual camera to see if certain areas are or not ever clear as other areas will be

Set your focus so the furthest object away is clearest

Do tests and also use osd to calibrate camera for better video

You can also remove the outer part to,make this camera smaller

Keep it cool with some air flow

Is there a guide somewhere regarding important fpv features in the camera menu? some of the features I have no idea their purpose.
Rcmodelreviews mentioned DSR Iirc for evening shadows, so I turned that on. There's a feature that asks you to cover lens for a moment too, no idea what that is.

Found out the problem, and you'll be surprised.
Turns out the Lawmate receivers are all bad, they output too low and cause a "shadow effect".

I'm very surprised at this, as Lawmate came reccommended. I don't know what to do now.

I don't see the shadow effect in your video

But rather a slight last minute adjustment , from good focus, to slightly out of focus at end of video

Try to go out side and focus on distant license plate on car, but do it as far away as you can

Turn lense so you can read plate, let go of lense and make sure it still is readable
Tighten screw and then set with piece of tape

Recheck to make sure license plate is still readable from long range

Another way to focus is take a flash light/bright led. Go about 200 feet(if you can) and do the focus to the smallest point of light you can get. Don't do it through a window, must be clear LOS.
