Steve/Glenn – these are the only GWS retracts I can find GWS MICRO Mechanical Retracts (4460362) – these are pink plastic with heavier duty legs, are these the same as the blue ones?

Never seen pink ones. Searched around and found them. Yeah, those look a bit stronger than the blue ones. Maybe they are new. Look perfect for models the size of yours. That is if you can fit them in the wing.
Why would they use pink? Ever seen pink parts on an airplane? Sheesh....

Hi Glenn – I have just found the blue retracts, would they be a better option? Do you think that flaps would be overkill on a model this size?

All depends on if they will fit in the wing. I would go with the strongest that will fit.

About flaps, it's up to you. I don't use them, heck , I usually don't even use landing gear! I like lightweight models that have a scale flight appearance. A P-51 that looks like a full scale going Mach2 just doesn't do it for me and spoils the scale effect. Add retracts and flaps then you need more power. More power means larger battery, it's slippery slope! The heavier model must fly fast and you have a guided missile instead of a scale model.
To achieve the appearance of a full scale aircraft the model must be lightweight to fly slowly enough to look correct in the air. I'm more into that than adding a bunch of fiddly scale bits that you cant see when it's flying anyway.

This is just my opinion of course. There are plenty of guys that have had success doing what you propose and like a fast model.
Phil (smokin beaver) and Mark (milesperpound) are a couple that come to mind. Maybe they will chime in about flaps and retracts.

Hi Glenn – Thanks for your views – maybe flaps would be a bit too much, I anticipate AUW to be around 10oz, preferably less – guess I need to step back and look at the model as a whole and consider how it should fly!

Hi Everyone – have been scheduled for surgery on my hands (certain tendons have to be released in my fingers) so will be out of the loop for a while as from the 12 Sept. Test pilot has also returned to Santa Barbara, so the B17 maiden will have to wait – not a problem, will give me chance to finish the detailing

Best of luck, Charles. One of the women who works with me had similar surgery a few months back and says the use she's regained of her hands has been incredible.

Can't wait to see how nice your models will look after this "upgrade"!
