Should I put ailerons on my Curtiss Jenny?
I'm building the Dare curtiss Jenny, and noticed that in most of my reference photos, it has ailerons. Building it scale would mean a pull-pull system for each aileron, which would mean either some very complicated engineering, or seperate aileron servos. I have sketched it out on the plans to where I am pretty sure it will be doable, but figured I would be well served to ask some of you guys if anyone had tried it, and if it was even feasible.
Were any of the original Jennys rudder/elevator only? This image shows the ailerons. They are on the top wing only. |

I guess I should add that I will be using a Speed 300 geared 4:1, or if this mod adds too much weight, an astro 010, which should handle it on 3s lipolys.

Someone has already converted the Dare Jenny to aileron control with scale like control wires.

If it has less than 5 degrees dihedral I'd say definitely some form of lateral cntrol is needed..Is that what you meant?
Rudder only gets pretty nasty - especially in any turbulence - at less than that. |

Yeah, if I built it "really scale" it would have a flat wing, which could go way off the suckmeter when reversing direction with rudder only. From reading the other thread, I learned that the ailerons help to maintain bank during a turn and make it a bit easier to fly. I'm thinking about putting about 2-3 deg dihedral and adding the ailerons to see how that goes.

Actually, I think the full scale version has some dihedral. While normally I'm a fan of rudder only- my Sterling Jenny was something of a bear on rudder only. Don't know what tweaks Pat has done, but I must admit- long skinny wings in parkfliers don't work real well, and might indeed benefit from ailerons.
