I just met Enrico of SAB Heli Division at IRCHA, and it was very nice to see him take the time out of his busy schedule to talk to an average customer. He looked over my Goblin, and even gave me the new steel pinion to replace the aluminum one I had in there. I was asking him about a creaking belt, and he assured me it was normal with the temperature changes. However without even thinking about it he also gave me a replacement belt anyway. It was a real pleasure to meet and talk to one of the guys behind the Goblin!

Lucky for me, I found this one on the ground while performing maintenance. It looked like two of the four screws that hold the flange on the tail pulley had simply vibrated out. However, upon closer inspection I found that the two bolts had actually sheared off.

So the question is, how do I prevent this from happening again? The heli only has about 20 flights or so...

Yeah this is the redesigned pulley, which is why I was surprised.

It could be that the factory over torqued the bolts, regardless I was able to remove the broken bolts and have just picked up some replacements from the LHS.

I don't own a Goblin so I can't tell the screw size (M2?), but I've had some success with titanium screws as technically they should have more tensile strength than Carbon Steel although lower modulus. Worth a look/test anyhow.

Quick update, since replacing the screws in the pulley, I've had many flights without a single problem. The Goblin is still flying great in all its awesomeness!

They are still friends. Joe was not confident he could actually fly the jet well so he let someone he trusted in the jet arena fly it.

These are the directions straight from SAB, I assume they know what they are talking about.

There is no adjustability on the backlash for these gears, so the plastic gear needs to be "cut" initially to get a proper fit. There were a few people who used a regular lube, and this actually destroyed the plastic gear by wearing it out prematurely.

The break in lube choice is not as critical as it originally was.

The original kits came with an aluminum pinion against the main gear. Some guys discovered that using any type of sticky lube material would cause the powder from the main gear wearing in to form into an abrasive paste. The ally pinion would be worn down very quickly causing loose gear mesh.

They have since replaced the ally pinion with a steel one. The main gear lash will wear in fine on its own using pretty much any type of lubrication now, even none at all.

What he said. My 700 was an early kit with the aluminum pinion. It has long since been replaced with a steel pinion.
