I was just down at the electronics store and saw a box of these motors laying around, so I bought a couple. These are almost ideniticle to the GWS motor only they are flat on one side. Tests indicate that They give the same performance as a GWS motor. After opening them up, what a surprize, CARBON BRUSHES!!! these motors can handle eight cells easily!!!!!! I strapped one to a GWS DX-A gearbox and have been flying it every since. only cost me.... drum roll..... 2 bucks canadian!!!!!!! a little code on teh motor says: MK419A taiwan

Sounds much like a Mabuchi 050. I've also had great success with these motors.

Hi Paul. Yep, you now own the legendary Mabuchi 050, which has found a home in quite a few drive systems, both homemade and commercially made. Not quite the zip of the GWS IPS motor but able to handle a bit more volts. There are very many variations in windings with this motor, I have some MK 412A, which don't seem to have the punch I need for my TM even on 3 Liths or 8 nicads, so I'm thinking that I have maybe a 6V version. It would be helpful to get the Mabuchi motor code deciphered so as to discover which MK series would be best suited to replace the IPS. I have heard that these motors were used primarily in cameras, but not confirmed. And sure, I have fried quite a few in experiments! Mine cost 69 cents each! Best Regards

code says RF-M50SC The M50 looks like mabuchi 050






weight is 8.6 grams. looks interesting

The Mabuchi 050 is flattened on two sides (see link below), not perfectly round like the M50 pictured in your link. The Mabuchi 050 in my Puma 050N drive is a MK428A. At 8.6 grams, the M50 sounds awfully light to have significant power. The Mabuchi 050 and GWS IPS motors both weigh more in the 15-20 gram range. By the way, the new, improved Firebird II is said to come with a different motor than the original Firebird. Whether it's actually better or not remains to be seen.

The Goldmine G9330 mabuchi 050 is an MJ413A and turns
15,300 rpm on 8 nicads w 3x2 prop. While the black GWS
with wet magnets turns 15,600 rpm on 6 nicads. Both draw
1.25amp.

Another contestant for the mysterious Firebird motor might be
the motor used in the Mini Max power system. It looks
identical to the Johnson 250 but when you look at the endbell
it says 'Mabuchi'. Flyers have over 100 flights on their mini-max
planes using 7 nimhs.
