SWEET! Great Job, she is really coming together

I see you also wired up your tail's control surfaces; as there are many ways to skin a cat, I was curious how ya did it?

I put a LED strip, facing down, in the middle of the elevator and rudder. Drilled thru the side of the surface to get the wires out. The leading edge of my empennage will have LED strip on it after it is covered. I will use a 1 inch loop of wire to connect the surface to the LED strip on the leading edge. I have done this before on foamys and it works fine.

Do you think I should connect the empennage lights to the the RGB controller or just leave them on solid? Maybe I can run the wires to have it both ways, or easily selectable.

Ready to start covering the tail.

I like your method better than the way I did it through the hinge... I fear one day mine will fatigue and break.

Some other hinge crossings to consider.

Finished covering all the tail surfaces. I put on all the covering then blow it down with the heat gun. I like to use a pair of cloth gloves and rub the covering down while using the heat gun. The gloves can also be used to cover seams and protect areas from too much heat.

I used white for the entire top of the stab and transparent red/green for the tips where the LEDs are. There is only a small difference in brightness from the top to bottom.

I wired up one of the Sparkfun green lasers to try. On 1S lipo it is plenty bright. A little moisture in the air and light rain made it show up quite well. Should look good in fog or smoke from fireworks.

I put Balsarite on the wing, let it dry, and then sanded it smooth. Wiped it down with a tack rag.

Added a piece of square stock to make a bay for the cable to come out and not rip the covering. The plan: All wires and servo extensions are in place and taped down. After the covering is applied, the bays can be cut out and the wires fished out for final assembly.

Ready to cover one bottom wing panel.
  • Cut a piece of Ultracote and remove the backing
  • Tack the short axis, pull tight
  • Tack the middle of the long axis, pull tight
  • Tack the corners, tight as possible
  • Keep dividing it down untill you can pull and seal it all the way around
  • Pull the wing tip over and seal it.
  • Trim
  • Roll all the edges

Because the center bottom is not sheeted, roll the covering over the center rib at least a quarter inch.

More panels.

I must say the rounded part in the front center of the Kadet wing sucks. It's been a long build and I am getting tired. That turned out to be the ugliest covering I have done for a while. Thank goodness it will only be out in the dark!

I cover the whole wing with the iron. Then use a quarter inch block under the trailing edge of the wing tips, with the wing on a flat table, to put in a little washout. With the block in place I put on the gloves and use the heat gun to shrink all the covering and rub it down on the ribs and spars.
