Nice photo. I'd almost bet with a little scaling you could produce a decal (on white backing decal paper) and save lot's of labor. Of course, that's unless you want build an actual dash for it.

The dash pic is actually kind of awesome what a great guy.

Good idea, but I'm afraid my computer skills aren't good enough for that. Haven't got a clue about all that artwork stuff. I'll have to make it up the old fashion way. There are plenty of gauge decal sheets out there. Somewhere.

Yep. Pete had the original dash & a box of gagues & switches given to him & he assembled them to take some photos for his model.

Finally.
Got a break in the weather coinciding with some time off work so I managed to paint the bottom of this thing & the cowl.
The top deck gets painted today if the wind stays down.
Even found a pilot. Good enough to pass as Leif Borgersen.

I took your advice about making a decal for the dash. My sister & her husband used to own the Xerox franchise for the state of Tasmania I sent the pic to her & she printed a few out for me. They look pretty good. I wonder what was wrong with the starboard turbine? There's a couple of yellow & red alarm lights lit up on the alarm panel.

I've got all the numbers & decals except for the yellow KjR logo & the Champion spark plug decal.
Can't even find a KjR image to copy. I should be able to find a Champion decal of the right size from the car guys.
But if you or anyone else can help with the yellow KjR I would be most grateful. See the pic on post #53

I was just surfing the wide wide world of web for some images of the U-95 & came across these two famous boats from the same era.
Man what a boat race.

1974 Seattle Gold Cup Heat 1C (7 min 18 sec)

Well over the last few days I've been adding some detail in the form of numbers, Air Force decals, dashboard & paint to the hull. The fins & the cowling around the exhausts were given a coat of grey. I think I picked a grey that was too dark in hindsight, but it's going to stay as it is.
Then the exhaust ports were given a coat of Aluminium.
Next, it was the job of masking up the whole boat for the red & orange stripes. The whole stripe was painted red & allowed to dry. The rear wing was done at the same time.
Not being a painter, the only way I could think of getting the red/orange blend line was to make a cardboard template & fix it down the middle of the stripe held up off the hull about 1/4". This was so the orange half would have a soft blend line like the original.
Well it seemed to work but the first one I did I ended up with the orange too wide. So I repainted it red & did it again. Much better.
The other stripe came out alright the first time, much to my relief. Neither of them are perfect, but like I said I'm no painter.
I still have the blue stripe over the cowl & down the sides to do yet & then it's the clearcoat.

Leif also drove the Notre Dame U-7 in the early 70's too I think. Probably a couple of others too.

Woohoo!!!I managed to get hold of a mobile auto pin striping guy & he came around & gave me a few meters of 12mm blue stripe for just a few bucks.
Man that saved a lot of masking & painting.
Just finished it & here's the results. Sets it off nicely.

That is without a doubt a gorgeous looking hydro Paul. Looking forward to a maiden video.

I did a bit of research on Leif. He actually lives in Issaquah, Washington where my office is located.

He was rookie of the year in 1969 driving the Notre Dame, finishing 2nd in points in 1970. After that he drove the Hallmark Homes in 1971, Vans P.X in 72.

Then in 1974 he was driving the U-95. The first test of the boat was September 12, 1973 - which lasted only about 2 laps before an engine warning light stopped the test run.

May 31, 1974 was the first race for the U-95, qualifying at 106mph for the regatta in Miami. That marked the first turbine boat to qualify for a race and Lief finished 5th.

Two weeks later in Kentucky, the U-95 claimed the fastest qualifier spot at 119.046mph.

In the Tri-Cities, the U-95 won two heats, defeating the defending national champion Pay-n-Pak in the process. However in the final heat the U-95 was damaged in a collision with Bill Muncy and the Atlas Van Lines during the final heat and ended up 4th.

The following week in Seattle, the U-95 blew an engine and sunk. (That would make it the second boat that sunk under Lief... didn't these guys know about pink foam? )

I couldn't find much information after that about Leif, but he did have quite a run back in the late 60's and 70's.
