Pick up a DX6i and an MCPX. You will love this little helicopter, see how you do with it. The simulator will get you pointed in the right direction but it's not like having a helicopter churning away in front of you at all. Fly a 40 size Mustang in the sim then take one out to the field and let it go see how long it lasts.

Some reading for you.

Hope this helps

a sim is the best money you can spend as the sim will only gain value as you get better

I don't know how talented you are without seeing a video. Why don't you just buy a helicopter and find out. There are some good ones under $100, which is like pocket change. How long can you fly in the sim without getting confused about which direction the helicopter is facing? How long can you fly before you crash?
