Am I correct that this 4mm x 400mm CF Rod is to be installed in the tail???

There is no groove or hole I would have to cut a grove into the tail for this. I see that the horizontal stab/elevator is weak without some sort of spar.

Please advise how did you add to make the tail sturdy???

See pic...

I used a hobby knife to cut a "canal" for the spar and used some of the stocked glue to hold it inside. Also put a piece of tape over that to reinforce.

It's also written in Finwing site: http://www.finwinghobby.com/faq_view.aspx?id=22 (picture 5)

Thanks,

I am finding that the Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3536-1200kv Brushless Outrunner Motor running on 4S LiPo and the stock 3 blade 9x5 prop produces a tremendous amount of thrust.

Are other Penguin users finding a hugh thrust from their setups?

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good fly!

yep, there is no groove this is why its easier to instal flat CF rod.
Have no idea why they are supplying the round one, way over sized .
If you can get the flat one :

Cut the foam with exacto knife (not through the stab) and push the CF in on glue.

You are right . No grove. I think this was am afterthought. I used a straight edge and a soldering iron to melt a groove in the stab. Worked great.

I cut off a bit of the leading edge, and put the rod there - pic attached.

this may work as a small brake and doesnt help much to make the stab stiffer

round CF would do better in front but still not good to make the stab stiff.

GoPro mount..

Greetings kids..

I've been flying and FPVing my Penguin over the last month or so trying to decide how to incorporate the GoPro.

I was excited when the upgraded canopy came out thinking the GoPro would mount up there easy as pie. Truth is it probably would but I didn't like the idea of that much weight so high. Plus also noticed a significant amount of distortion through the thicker canopy (FPV tested with and without the canopy).

My solution (for now) was to cut out the canopy so my FPV camera doesn't have to look through it. And using a little heat from my covering gun to make a flat mounting spot for the GoPro lower than stock. (See Pics attached).

Hope to test it this week but wanted to share today's work with all y'all.

Hope someone finds this helpful.

There's no extra drag, so I don't understand your statement about the small brake.

It was a round rod, BTW.

And it makes the stab plenty stiff - else I wouldn't have recommended it.

I like what you are doing here. The upgrade canopy is not clear enough for my liking. You might want to add some bigger holes to the back of it though. Even with the ones you made, I think it will be a huge air brake.

Edit: I also just noticed the placement of your Vtx behind the canopy. I like it! Do you have a better pic of that?

'huge air brake' is a massive understatement. I would bet the plane would not even ROG like that. The area of the air scoop would be like putting 5 Gopros on the front. And I have heard some folks say the GoPro cuts their flight times by up to half already.

I'd have to agree. That big open scoop is going to catch a lot of air. I was thinking of cutting my thicker canopy all the way around so all that was left is basically a plastic support to help support/hold the shape of the foam canopy base. Then I'd mount the GoPro to the forward section of foam. I'm not sure if I'll do that yet...really need to get back to work on the Penguin...but that's what I've been milling around in my head.

Yes, after looking at it again, I would make some huge holes (like the size of your fist) in the back and just leave the sides and top center to support the Gopro.
