LED STRIPS

Regular LED Strips
-Superbright 3528 SMD LED
-Strip is approx 8mm wide
-Non-Waterproof
-60 LEDs per meter
-White vinyl face
-Self-adhesive back
-Can be cut at every 3rd LED (approx 2")
-Flexible
-Input volts: DC 12V
-Current per meter: 400mA
-24 watts/5 meter
-Viewing Angle : 120°
-Life Span: 50,000+ hours
-approx. weight per meter: 13 grams

The regular LED strips can be cut and solder-joined to each other in any combination. In other words, on a wing, you could have a 2" strip of blue...joined to a 12" strip of white...joined to a 4" strip of green at the wing tip.

BLUE Regular (item: 0001B)

GREEN Regular (item: 0001G)

RED Regular (item: 0001R)

COOL WHITE Regular (item: 0001CW)

WARM WHITE Regular (item: 0001WW)

Notes: Depending on the manufacturer, the LED strips may have different types of solder points. In either case, the solder points function the same way. You cut them down the middle and one point becomes positive and the other negative (see picture 1). Before you solder the strips, please test the polarity. You can do this with a 9-volt battery and two short pieces of insulated wire (see picture 2). Do not worry about getting the polarity wrong when testing, reverse polarity from the 9-v will not damage the strips.

Solder Points (picture 1)

Simple 9-v Tester (picture 2)

Waterproof LED Strips
The waterproof strips contain the same LEDs as above, but are encased in silicone. Due to the silicone covering, they are a little heavier and just a tiny bit dimmer. The strips are waterproof, but any new solder joints or connections must be treated/covered with silicone or some other waterproofing material to maintain the "waterproofness" of the circuit.

The waterproof LED strips can be cut and solder-joined to each other in any combination. In other words, on a wing, you could have a 4" strip of blue at the wing root...joined to a 12" strip of white...joined to a 2" strip of green at the wing tip.

-Superbright 3528 SMD LED
-Strip is approx 8mm wide
-Waterproof (encased in silicone)
-60 LEDs per meter

RGB LED STRIPS

RGB SMD 3528 LED Strips (item: 0003RGB)
RGB 3528 LED strips are similar to Regular (single color) 3528 LED strips (see specs and dimensions). RGB 3528 strips contain 9 to 12 leds per cuttable section. On a 5-meter roll, some sections may contain 9 leds and other sections may contain 12 leds (it depends on the manufacturer). Each cuttable section is either 6" or 8" long, depending on the number of leds per section. Each section contains alternating red, blue, and green single-color chips. (Because of this, some of the controller color options are not "true". For instance, in dynamic mode #10, the controller attempts to create "white" by combining all three colors. The result is all 3 colors being activated, but the result is not white.) Each section, when cut, contains 4 solder points (+,r,g,b). All RGB strips (3528 and 5050) require a controller to operate. They cannot be plugged directly to a battery or other power source (due to them having 4 leads (+,r,g,b).

-Superbright 3528 SMD RGB LED
-Strip is approx 8mm wide
-Non-Waterproof
-approx 60 LEDs per meter
-White vinyl face
-Self-adhesive back
-Can be cut at every 9th or 12th LED (approx 6" to 8")
-Flexible
-Input volts: DC 12V
-Current per meter: ~400mA
- ~4.8 watts/meter or ~24 watts/5 meter
-Viewing Angle : 120°
-Life Span: 50,000+ hours

RGB SMD 5050 150 LED Strips (item: 150RGB)

RGB 5050 "150" LED strips are similar to RGB 5050 "300" LED strips (see specs and dimensions). RGB 5050 "150" LED strips contain fewer LED chips per meter (30 vs 60) and thus require less power. RGB 5050 "150" LED strips contain 3 leds per cuttable section. Each cuttable section is 4" long. Each section contains 3 tri-color chips (red, green, and blue on a single chip). Each section, when cut, contains 4 solder points (+,r,g,b). All RGB strips (3528 and 5050) require a controller to operate. They cannot be plugged directly to a battery or other power source (due to them having 4 leads (+,r,g,b).

-Superbright RGB 5050 "150" SMD LED
-Color: RedBlueGreen (RGB)
-Strip is approx 10mm wide
-Non-waterproof
-30 LEDs per meter
-White vinyl or copper-colored face
-Self-adhesive back
-Can be cut at every 3rd LED (approx 4")
-Flexible
-Input volts: DC 12V
-Current per meter: 600mA
-7.2watts/1 meter or 36 watts/5 meter
-Viewing Angle : 120°
-Working Tempreture:-20 to 50° c
-Life Span: 50,000+ hours

RGB SMD 5050 300 LED Strips (item: 300RGB)

RGB SMD 5050 "300" LED strips are similar to RGB 5050 "150" LED strips (see specs and dimensions). RGB SMD 5050 "300" LED strips contain more LED chips per meter (60 vs 30) and thus require more power. RGB SMD 5050 "300" LED strips contain 3 leds per cuttable section. Each cuttable section is 2" long.

-Superbright RGB 5050 "300" SMD LED
-Color: RedBlueGreen (RGB)
-Strip is approx 10mm wide
-Non-waterproof
-60 LEDs per meter
-White vinyl face
-Self-adhesive back
-Can be cut at every 3rd LED (approx 2")
-Flexible
-Input volts: DC 12V
-Current per meter: 1.2A
-14.4 watts/meter or 72 watts/5 meter
-Viewing Angle : 120°

OTHER ITEMS

RGB 4-pin Adapter: $1.50 each (item: A-RGB)
You will need 1 adapter to connect one end of the 3528/5050 RGB strip to the controller. You will need to solder the 4-strand wire to the 4 solder points on the LED strip.

RGB 4-pin Solderless Adapter w/ extension wire: $2.50 each (item: C-RGB)
You will need 1 adapter to connect one end of the 3528/5050 RGB strip to the controller. This one is solderless, so all you need to do is line up the solder points on the LED strip to the 4-pin connector and snap it shut. No solder. The other end plugs into the controller using the 4-pin male connector. This one is solid white.

RGB Extension Wire (4 strand): $.75 per foot (item: W-RGB)
If you cut the RGB LED strips to space them or to "jump" to another part of the plane/car/copter, you will need to connect them by soldering connection wire to the 4 solder points on each strip. Any thin wire will do, but this 4-strand wire is specifically made for the purpose. Of course, you could also strip off one or two of the strands to make 2 or 3-strand wire.

RGB 4-pin Solderless Adapter w/ extension wire: $2.50 each (item: B-RGB) - SOLD OUT
You will need 1 adapter to connect one end of the 3528/5050 RGB strip to the controller. This one is solderless, so all you need to do is line up the solder points on the LED strip to the 4-pin connector and snap it shut. No solder. The other end plugs into the controller using the 4-pin male connector. This one has the multi-color flat wire.

REFERENCE

Definitions:
SMD 3528
•Surface Mounted Device
•consists of one light-emitting chip
•dimensions of chip : 35 x 28 mm

SMD 5050
•Surface Mounted Device
•consists of three light-emitting chips
•dimension of chip : 50 x 50 mm
Theoretically, SMD5050 is 3 times brighter than SMD3528.

Summary
The 3528 SMD is a single-chip medium-output LED. The 5050 SMD is a larger, three-chip high-output LED that has approximately 3X the brightness of the 3528.

For the purpose of a RC night flying setup, 3528 SMD LED strips powered at 11.1v/12v are plenty bright and can be powered directly from the main 3s lipo flight pack. This includes the single color and rgb 3528 strips.

For all RGB LEDs, and any LEDs powered by a controller, I recommend powering them from a separate battery (3s lipo), and not the main flight battery.

Awesome Lights!

Just got some lights from Bombay. They are great! Quick shipping too.

I got 4m: 2m of 150s, 1m of 300s and 1m of 3528. And I got 3 controllers.

I connected them all up and put them in various strobe and colored changing modes. The cool thing about the 3528s is that the LEDs chase during a couple of modes. The LEDs don't chase with the 5050s. The controllers are pretty awesome.

With all 4m hooked up using 2 contollers, I was typically using less than 10W. 7W on the last batch of settings (varies with mode) so definitely able to pull from my main batts (4400 mah).

Will post a video of my UFO Quad after I get it flying.

Thanks Bombay!

I am considering another couple of LED projects, nothing to the extent I did with Burned Retina, but will be needing a good amount of LEDs.

I was curious, do you take credit card? I was not sure if you are a retailer or not... I am hoping so
