Build Log
70mm Delta "Vixen XD1"

I decided to start another build. I was inspired by flyboykens scratch built creation the "Mantis or Mako" awesome bird! not sure which name he decided on?...I threw out "Vixen" just came to my mind, anyway I have a name for my creation What makes this type of building fun is there are no limitations. The only plans are in your head.

The Vixen XD1 (X stands for expiremental, D stands for delta, 1 because it is the 1st and only...plus I thought it sounded cool This is what the plan is so far.

Detrum 70mm EDF
60 amp ESC with 3 amp BEC
Sky lipo 5s 2200 (975 watts at 56 amps)
HK 6 channel orange Rx with sat.
2, 9 gram servos ( maybe more if I go with operational rudders
Primary construction material is the Dow 1/2" blue foam.
W.S. 30"
Length 33"

Here are some pics of what I got done so far. I have never built a Delta so any input or comments would be great.

Looks like a great project! I'll be interested to see how the Detrum fan does on 5 cell packs, and the longevity of it... w.

Nice! I just built a similar carbon delta and the CG should be calculated by the delta only, dont factor in the fuse at all... I made the mistake of factoring in the fuse as some lift and its not.

Thanks, I have been running a 5s on another Detrum in a F35. The 5s really wakes these fans up over 4s. On 5s getting 975 watts at 56 amps. Hasnt burnt up yet

Do you have any pics on here? Id love to see it. Thanks for the info on the CG. Right now I am trying to decide if I want to put functioning rudders on my vertical stabs? Not sure I would need them accept for stall turns or knife edge...any input?

I am going to role a tube out of either very thin alum. or plastic sheeting. I will attach it to fan then shape the inside of the nacelle to fit around it. It will extend aprox. 2 inches out the back. On these fans 90 percent opening seems to wok well. Good thrust and speed.

Anybody have any input on whether I should have operational rudders. Since it is going to be a hand launch with no gear that rudders would really only be good for stall turns or knife edging? Anybody else out there with deltas have any input.

Yeah I was trying to decide. I put them on my F35 I used one servo per rudder. But on this build I am trying to keep the weight down. If I was going to do it I was thinking about using one servo and then a linkage set up. I think I will design the stabs so that I can come back later and add them if I want.

Here are some pics of the fan mount. I hope to pick up some 1/2" thick elevon balsa tomorrow. My 3/4oz FG cloth came I need to decide if I am going to use WBPU or Epoxy resin. I know that WBPU would be lighter but the epoxy would be stronger....I just dont know yet, any suggestions?

Sure do http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1672531

I dont think you need a rudder. Cant hurt to have one. I find with delta's like these, they tend to nose down a little when you use rudder, inherent to delta design. I go with bank and yank.

Very Nice! have you maidened her yet? I have some 3/4 oz cloth, I also have some SS1000 on order. I need to decide how I am going to finish her. I am going to take your advise and skip the rudders. It will save some weight and keep it simple. Id love to see your carbon fly!
