I am actually looking for a esc for a boat but I have both type of batteries for it. It had the old reostat type speed controler on it.

Most ESC now will auto-detect the cell type and beep accordingly.
Really it's not the cell type that's the relevant matter - its the number of cells (total volts) and whether you need Brushless or Brushed.
Basically the ESC doesn't care where it gets Volts from .... it's what it delivers to is the real crux.
