I fly a lot, but I'm clueless when it comes to info out in the rc world. What are all the aircraft categories and what does it say about flying characteristics?

Sport is just like a type of flying which is relaxing. So you say "alright weather looks nice i might go for a fly today"mand just fly. Nothing fancy.

Pylon is a type of racing. There are three poles set out in a isoceles triangle pattern

3d is generally cosidered to by flying "off the prop" as the wing isnt providing any or much lift. They also generally make plane do what they are just not supposed to be do

They are all that i know about but there are. Many many others

f3a & f3c are both the classes for pattern competition which is precision aerobatics. There are numerous classes in competition depending on what you are flying They'll be denoted by letters/numbers that are set up by the FAI (Federal Aeronautique Internationale) which is the world sanctioning body for international aviation competition.

Go look on the AMA website at the various types of competition (scale, pattern, pylon, glider, free flight, control line, etc) and you'll be able to see the various classes, their designations, and read the full competition rules for each class.
