I think you're thinking wing Tim and Alex is thinking fuse maybe.

Alex its actually not that hard to make an epoxy mould of your fuse and you can make your wing really accurate with templates and use that as a plug too. Now I know some of the tricks that Tim and the other guys have shared with me its really not that hard at all and for your size plane might not even take as long as machining. My moulds are really simple and I dont even use a gell coat. I make sure I use pva, and so far have pulled 4 wings and maybe 8 fuses and had no damage to the moulds at all. Check out the Wabbit build thread if you want to see how accurate you can make a bagged wing plug. Otherwise you could machine positives into mdf and make epoxy moulds of them. I know this is what Tim and Sean have done- What do you reckon fellas?

Cheers Josh. Yep i am making the RT42 molds that way, but the RT30 is way too complicated to make a plug for.

I will get aluminium if I fail to get suitable resin type block

a mate of mine got plugs made for a 3mm model.
It still hasn't been made.
main reason is the amount of work to do finishing it off.
1. to get the finish
2. to get the wings straight

I am not saying it cant be done, I am just saying think hard, and speak to people that have done is successfully to learn the tips and techniques.

If I had cnc access I would take that over foam cutting any day.

For the smaller models cutting positives from MDF could be quite a good solution. But as said before, take off more than you want, then put a layer of glass on, and machine that back. then a layer or 2 of gel coat and do a final cut, polish and mould.

If you work in an engineering shop and can access big plates of steel, to use as backing plates, go for it. It will help the accuracy.

Start small. Maybe the fuz first, pull one out and then go for the wing. The learning you get between your first couple will be invaluable.

good Luck, I can wait to see these things available commercially.

William

Well the RT42 does wicked Ninja stars!!!!!!!!!!! Better than the D60 or Scratcho! Got it on video too Did 156mph in rough air. Was not used to the site and air was too huge for it's light weight. If anyone saw my RT30 first DS lap on April 5th at Weldon, you will know what too light means in big air!

It looks like a Ninja star

How will you fit the top of the fin in on top side? A 2pc seperate mold for the fin that will drop onto a lip/recess on the top half?

Nothing too fancy. Probably just screw from underneath onto a flat on the top

Well foamies have been ruling my building time recently, plus having to drive to the other side of town to do any work on the molds also puts a stop to much progress.

But they are almost done. Pics:
