Tailwind Gliders ALES Scoring Spreadsheet

I have updated my ALES spreadsheet!

It now allows for 32 pilots, 4 groups and 12 rounds.
The changes are for more rounds and optimized for the iPad using the "Numbers" app.

I wrote an article for RCSD on why I wrote the spreadsheet, it's function and use which is available here:
http://www.rcsoaringdigest.com/pdfs/...-2011-0708.pdf

It's available on the "Articles/Files" page of my website:
http://tailwindgliders.com/

Comments and suggestions are always appreciated.

Thanks
Curtis

Curtis,

They used your spreadsheet at CASA and Lauren ended up doing the scoring. She said it worked fine. The only negative I could see was that it let guys sometimes fly back to back, i.e. they had to fly the last group in one round and the first group in the next round. Does the latest version still let that happen?

I'm a n00b, but what I found in my one contest using that s/s was that flying back to back meant that you were going to get a nice long break Also, if you don't let that happen and you are flying only two groups, then it cements the two groups together for the whole meet, which might not be fair, say to the guy stuck in the group with two really good performers for the entire meet.

Cheers!

The back-to-back check gets disabled for 2 groups.

Glen,
I'll look at that and see what may be done.

Randy,
How many groups were run in the contest and I will see into that too.

As someone said for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

We were running 3 groups that day. Each group had 3 or 4 pilots.

Glen,

I read more carefully and I see what you are saying.

Many years ago I had the heli bug and there was this wonderful website that helped me with successfully setting up and soloing a Logo 10 and if I am not mistaken you are that Glen?! thanks!

I have since retired the Logo 10 and periodically fly a Trex450. Tomorrow oversized floats should arrive for that experience too.

Hi Curtis,

Nice spreadsheet btw.

Yes I be him Imagine the hopeless situation when a highly rated web hosting provider goes under and they've entered themselves as the domain name owners (I paid through them) and then they don't respond to repeated attempts at communication about this from many site owners. Then Tucows the domain name registrar does not help/respond to email and voicemail. Bye Bye LOGOheli (pretty well run its course) and littleheli - had to sit by and watch them disappear. Too much work to change everything to a different domain name and too much bother later on once the domain ownership expired and was up for grabs

I seem to be a glider guy now

Cheers!

Randy,
I am down to three or four that are back to back on the entire spreadsheet of three matrix's and four groups. One of the reasons I wrote the spreadsheet was to learn how the scoring worked and to ensure even assignment of groups and that I won't compromise on that.
But I am getting there! I think I will be seeing A,B,C's..... In my sleep tonight!

I've been looking at some other scoring program matrix's and I certainly realize that with a certain number of pilots and groups there is actually only one perfect solution for rounds.

However, it seems to get the matrix to work so that someone doesn't fly back-to-back then you end up with folks not flying against another competitor till many rounds into the contest. It seems it's about round 10 for a three flight groups and round 14 for four flight groups.

If you fly back-to-back then it can occur much sooner.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Whew, well it's fixed! The rounds are grouped evenly and there is no back to back flying! However, as all of the scoring programs I've reviewed, with two groups it still takes about eight rounds to get everyone to fly against one another and in three groups it takes about a dozen or more rounds to accomplish it.

As you well know that's why it's best to fly as many rounds as possible with the number of landing tapes/field length possible.

The spreadsheet can be downloaded here:

July 2nd Update!

There was an error on a score card that was updated on the 2nd of July. It's been fixed and the update has been posted.
Please redownload the file.

The error was for a two group contest. Pilot #11's score card showed a different group for Round 1 than what he was actually supposed to fly in!

Sorry about that.
