Help!
My new Tower Hobbies Vista EP sailplane

has a Great Planes ESC in it, that won't arm and spin up the motor???

The instructions say that to arm the ESC you have to reverse the throttle in transmitter setup, then slowly advance the throttle to full until the light goes out....the light never goes out.

Anybody familiar with this ESC or this problem?

I'm using a Spectrum AR500 receiver - it's binding fine - have full control of the other servos, the ESC just won't arm??

thanks.

Usually the throttle only needs reversing, (servo reverse feature), for Futaba type RC.

Try switching the throttle back to normal and try again, (always remove the prop when setting up an ESC).

It's the battery isn't it?

I'm trying a 11.1v li-po and they've got a 8v ni-cad in the instructions.

I'm going to have to change the motor and ESC out.

I'm guessing that the ESC wants to be a idle before it will arm. So you have to make it think its at idle.

Try going into your tx sub trims and setting the throttle trim to idle. Then set the digital trim buttons to idle as well. Make sure you are setting the idle point and not the high point (check servo reversing).

If that doesn't work check your transmitter programing to see if the throttle stick is actually set to control the throttle. The ESC might be under the control of a slider or something else.

Don't start replacing things, yet. My guess is that everything is in good working order, now its up to you to figure out the glitch. If you can't figure it out call Great Planes customer service and lay the problem in their lap. Computer radios....

Good luck,

Eric

This is a Spectrum DX7.

The throttle sub trim is set to 0 right now. It has a H for high to go up and a L for Low to go down. Should I go H or L? I don't see an idle.

Yes, the throttle is set to the left stick.

Do both. With servo reversing there's no telling which end is the "low point". Are there instructions with the ESC? There might be some kind of arming sequence you need to do. Maybe do an RC Groups search for " Great Planes ESC problems" or the like.

You say that the throttle sub trim is at zero. Can you set it below zero. On my tx I can go to -10 on the low side and +10 on the high side. If you can, try setting the sub trims to less than zero and greater than 100%. Don't forget to set the digital trim buttons on the tx to the extreme high and low points too. I guarantee that when you figure this out it will be something simple.

I'm serious about calling Great Planes and getting their customer service to figure it out. Maybe they have Saturday hours.

Thanks I'll try that search.

Yes my sub-trim goes to +- 125.

Searched for Great Planes customer service and found complaints about it. Still worth a try.

Thanks again,
Mike

BE sure all throttole trims are at idle. Then turn on the TX. THEN hook up battery.

If it doesn't start, disconnect the battery, turn off the tx, reverse throttle on TX. Then do the above again. I had to make several increasingly frustrated calls to H-L before I got it sorted out.

I noticed this on the Tower Hobbies site for that ESC-

This speed control does not include instructions. Use only with 8.4V battery.

Is the 7 cell Nimh pack fully charged, as some ESC are sensitive to receiving the correct input voltage, otherwise that may not arm.

I'm using three cell 11.1V LiPo Pack.

Is there a converter for 11.1V to 8.4V?

Thanks

Is your glider fitted with a brushless motor ? If its a can (brushed motor)
its been my experience that a esc for nicads/ brushed motor wont work with lipos.
I think you are better off getting a new programable esc like a Hobby King Plus 40 and a programming card.
Regards
Tony
