Question
FMS Japanese zero 1400mm question

Hi.

First off let me start by saying I just opened an account with rcgroups and I think this will be a great place for me to learn more about this hobby

I recently purchased a FMS japanese zero "ZEKE" and it will be coming in the mail soon, but I am having concerns about power supply for this warbird.

The manufacturer says it runs on a 6200Mah 4 cell lipo...I've seen people use a 2650 4 cell, so I guess that can work too.

All the big online retailers like hobbypartz and nitroplanes are out of stock on all the batteries recommended for the zero, but I wonder if a 2200Mah battery can work.

So the question I have is...Can I use a 2200Mah 4 cell lipo battery to power the FMS japanese zero??? Again the recommended battery for the plane is 2600Mah.

depend on how many amps the stock power system use.
if you get a high enough C rating battery, it will work just fine.
You might want to check and see if a smaller battery will make it tail heavy, then you have to add washer ( or dead weight ) to get the CG right which is a waste of weight in my opinion.

Sounds like the 62 is a typo. Should have been 26 instead of 62. The 2200 should be fine, just a slightly shorter motor run. As long as the CG is within the MFGs recomendation, give'er.

With a 2200 batt. your flight time will be pretty short,and you will have to add some nose weight to get the plane balanced, I fly mine with a 4 cell 3000 35c batt.

A 2200 battery should be fine, as long as it's at least 20C.

I wattmetered my FMS Zero on the stock motor and stock 3-blade prop at 33 amps. So if your 2200 battery is rated 20C or better, you should be OK. If it's 15C or less, I wouldn't use it.

As far as flight time, the Zero is a real amp miser, so yes, a 2200 is enough battery for decent flight time, as long as you don't fly WOT the whole flight. On my first day of flying my Zero, I carefully logged flight time, and amps put back into the batteries by the charger after I got home. On an eight-minute flight, I put back in 1478 mAh into the battery, and on a five-minute flight, I put back in 991 mAh (both flights mixed throttle usage). So that 2200 should certainly give you eight minutes flight time with plenty of reserve.

And as skyhawkdc mentioned, the other consideration is to make sure you add weight to the nose if needed to get the CG right.

BTW: that part of your message made me laugh out loud. Nitroplanes/HobbyPartz out of stock of things? Ummm...it happens (to say the least). Secondly, Nitroplanes and Hobbypartz are not the the sum total of all the big retailers...they're actually only one retailer operating under those two different names (among others). Thirdly, there are other places to go for decent low-cost batteries. For example, this is one of the batteries that I am currently using with my FMS Zero, and it's in stock at the moment:

Yeah..I did have a typo on my question. Sorry :P Those batteries are o.k. but I prefer Sky Lipo or Blue Lipo. And I use 40c for all my 4 cell lipos. I've noticed from other batteries that are below 40c, they don't seem to last as long. And I barely use these batteries.

Also about nose weight.... I'm going to use a 2650 4 cell when I can get one, but would I still have to add nose weight if I use a 2650Mah 4 cell??

I fly my FMS Zero with the supplied 4s 2600 battery as well as 4s 3300's.

Sounds like a typo on your mfg specs.

I doubt you'd be able to cram a 4s 6200 in the nose of the FMS Zero. I had to modify my canopy for the 3300 due to the extra length compared to the 2600.

42-60 size motors can often spike 60 to 65A.

If you're going to use a 2200mAh battery, it should be at least 30C to cover the amps that this size motor can pull. Maybe 25C for a 3000 mAh battery.

No you would not need nose weight with a 2650. That's basically the ideal battery size for the plane. And I'm not even sure you would need balance weight with a 2200 (that's why I said to add nose weight "if needed"). It depends on where you are comfortable with the CG. I fly my Zero with the CG a little aft of the manual-recommended range of 80-85. I like it at about 88mm because it takes less elevator to hold inverted. So when I was flying with the stock prop (which has a heavy spinner-securing nut) and a 3300 battery, I actually had some weight on the tail.

And BTW: the battery compartment design on this plane is not very friendly when it comes to fine-tuning the position of your battery for tweaking CG. And it's also kind of narrow, compared to the form-factor of most batteries of appropriate size. So you most likely will need to adapt/customize the battery compartment at least a little, regardless of which battery you get...especially if you want to avoid using balance weight.

Whaa--aat? Do you have this plane? And did you read my post #6 in this thread? No way you are going to ever see 60-65 amps on the stock motor and prop on this plane, unless something is badly broken. It pulls 33 amps WOT. And that's on a ground test, before possible unloading inflight.
