My son's fourteen minute flight!

Took my son Ian soaring this morning at our awesome club field. Conditions were good and you could feel the thermals cycling through. He did his first solo high-start launch and on his 4th or 5th launch did a fourteen minute flight. I believe he used three diferent thermals during that flight and then greased it in. He had a grin from ear to ear and said it was "epic". He may have even forgotten about girls for a few minutes!

Congratulations! Along with the rest of us, you'll never forget this. 10 years from now, you can close your eyes and still see your plane in the heavens on your first boomer lift...it's what drives us all.

Get him hooked now, because once he smells gasoline and perfume, he'll pretty much hang up the transmitter for at least several years.

How do I know this? My son, Little Flyer, is now 20 and the last year he did lots of flying was 2008.

You'd better stop right now, or pretty soon he will fly better than you do.

Reminds me of when I was in my "youte".... But I never stopped. I opted not to go to my Jr. Prom cuz I had to have a Hobie Hawk. It was one vs. the other and I couldn't have both. The Hawk won out.

As the comments point out, you never forget the "first time". Mine was when I launched my J & J Industries American Eagle and when it got 10' beyond me I had no control over it. I watched it for over 20 minutes, flying as a free-flight.

My first "real" thermal where I had full control over it was my Hobie Hawk, where I clocked 30 minutes....

Congrats and stay with it!

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. I'm glad that my son values soaring and spending time with his dad.

I went out today and had 7 "sled rides" and decided to launch one more time before packing up. I did 20:21 and landed at my feet. Had to spin down three times. These fifty-three year old eyes aren't meant to see a 2 meter at that distance.

Rising Air,

Thomas
