Check all the switches are in their neutral positions.

Common problem.

Flash it with the ER9X firmware and you won't look back! I did mine and it's simply brilliant.

I use the frsky and I find it very good with the rx modules still very resonably priced. I had some interference issues near a cell phone tower on the standard Turnigy rx (several Spektrum Radio tx/rx guys have lost planes at this location due to the same interference) but those issues were not present with the frsky tx/rx system.

Telemetry is also available with Frsky modules if you want to go down that path. I haven't found programming an issue with this radio so I can't comment on the smartipants board change.

Consider also getting a lipo transmitter battery - Hobbyking do one ($15) that you just need to change the battery connector on - you can cut the one of the standard battery carrier. You only need to charge every month or so!

Er9x and Open9x are both so much better than the standard firmware that it's hardly worth perservering. Flash it and never look back. Virtually all of the open source 9X firmware builds have features to shame $1000 radios.

Someone suggested the smartieparts board. An excellent solution, but they're sometimes difficult to get because demand far outstrips supply. If you're alright with fiddly soldering, this works well too, for a total outlay of $3.98 including shipping

Module-wise, if you just want to upgrade to FrSky with a minimum of fuss, the JR module is a drop-in replacement. Otherwise, for those who like soldering, the "hack" (DHT) module has several advantages, because it's easier to integrate with telemetry than having to pipe everything back into the Tx from the back of the JR module.

I am using FrSky and reflashed with TH9X software. Really impressed. I only bought it for an experiment and now use it with the foamies all the time.
