Many are used in K&B outboard electric conversion without issues except for corrosion if salt water and not rinsed after running(would be the same with IC power).

When used on an outboard they will be fully submerged sometimes and just keep running. As the last poster said, just make sure to displace the water and oil the bearings after they get wet, especially if running in salt water.
