Saito FS-61 and FA-80

Hi, I found a couple of Saito engines at a bootsale, however I cannot find any information about them or what their retail price was.. all I know is that I bought them very cheap. Does anyone have any information to share about these ?

Here are some pictures of the engines

Thanks

Nice find. One is a Saito and the other is a OS. The .80 is a Saito. The .61 is an OS.

http://Saito-engines.info has all you need to know on that web page. As regards the OS, do a search on OS .61 Four stroke engines.

While both engines look well used, they are not that old. Probably 10 or so years old. So there ought to be a lot of info avialable on them on the web.

Probably the first thing to do is check the tappet clearances and reset them. The info on tappet clearances is commonly available. They are ringed engines and so a new ring would make them almost as good as new if a ring is needed. If they have plenty of compression I would not go into replacing the rings. If the bearings are bad you might consider doing a ring replacement along with a bearing replacement. Then you will have two essentially overhauled engines and all you will need is a couple of planes to install them into.

The 2nd smaller Saito could possibly be a FA .45 or an Fa .50, I doubt that its a .56

Depends on the overall condition. The FA-80 is an older version, probably worth in excellent running condition about $100~$125.

The OS FS-61 is a pre-Surpass unit from the early 80's.

A great runner for a 40 size plane, just not the strongest engine in the world.

I just noticed tht the smaller Saito has a choke so it not likely a FA .45, its most likely a .50.

I TIBOR, you need to look closer. The smaller engines is an OS .61 Surpass and is not repeat not a Saito. The large engine is indeed a Saito .80.

Looks like photos of three (3) different engines to me. Two Saitos and one OS.

The OS is definitly NOT a Surpass, it has the wrong head and it would say Surpass on the side. The Surpass came out sometime around 1990, so this would be an '80's engine. As for the Saito being worth $325, yeah right, in what market? Both are good runners, mount them up and fly 'em.

Indeed it is an FS-61 not Surpass and it came out in 1983 followed by the FS-90 and the FS-120 that same year.

Reg, I didn't comment on the OS because my sole OS fourstroke was a .52 four stroke. It was a fine engine.

That smaller Saito should have had a sticker beside the FA indicating its size.

An FS 61 crossed the Atlantic a few years ago burning a gallon of Coleman fuel.
Thought you might find this fact interesting.

The FS61 I had ran ok but not a ton of power. The carb was an airbleed and the fuel tank position was a little more critical . Parts are/have been hard to come by.
