Spektrum DX18 vs Futaba 12Z vs Hitec Aurora 9

Hi every one, I am in serious thought about choosing 1 of these 3 Tx... I honestly cant make up my mind so I have come here for some help... I can get all these for under $1000. The DX18, Hitec Aurora 9 are brand new and the Futaba 12Z is 2nd Hand.

I will be flying electric planes mostly (occasional 3D heli), will have landing gear, flaps, even thrust vectoring. (would like built in sequencing for gear doors).

I dont use Telemetry atm that said if i had it I probably would eventually use it. I also dont use S-Bus yet but if i had it i would probably use it.

I have put all the major pro's and con's that i know of down below. (im not to big on mixing other then the thrust vectoring, i dont have any 3D planes atm)

So any more help or pros/cons would be really helpful and also what would you choose?

Pro's vs Con's
DX18 Pros: telemetry, possible 18 channels, 10 aeroplane wings and 6 tails
DX18 Cons: screen resolution, 22 FPS, screen scroller (yuk)

Hitec 9 Pros: Big Touch Screen, Telemetry, comes with 4 servos, cheap Rx's compared to futaba and Spektrum
Hitec 9 Cons: Limited to 9 channels, external antenna wire (yuk), bar graph only for trim, update cable/box needed

Futaba 12Z Pros: 12 channel, screen control buttons and joystick, easy updates, FASST Rx, S-BUS Rx (might be cool)
Futaba 12Z Cons: Not much information on it and no reveiws, no telemetry

Thanks in advance

You can program with a Spektrum screen scroller MUCH faster than you can program a 12Z.

Also , the DX18 can have an 11ms rate with up to 12 channels, as for the DX18's screen resolution, the 12Z has a cumbersome menu interface and no backlight.

What are "FPS" - Frames per second? If so, the DX18 can do 90 frames per second (11ms) for most receivers, not 22. When using the XPLUS channels it does 45 (22ms).

Quique is using his DX18 to fly a 3D jet (Eurofighter, photo and videos here), which includes thrust vectoring, gyros, canard, and elevon mixing for the wing. It's a rather complex aircraft and the DX18 has no trouble supporting it.

But for clarity, remember it is only ever A/E/R/Aux1 channels at 11ms all the rest never get better than 22ms.

Yes, same as always has been except the Rudder is now 11ms on the DX18. Older radios are only A/E/Aux1.

The best radio is one that feels good in your hands and you enjoy using.

I have no experience of the Aurora or DX18. I have had a 12Z for 4 years and it has been faultless. I added a 2.4 module about three years ago. I can't speak for programming ease of the other sets but the 12Z is unquestionably extremely powerful in its capabilities and in my view easy to program. There was a review on RCGroups way back - a search should find it. I have no plans to change from the 12Z any time soon.

Well, just to clarify. With the Futaba 12FG, 12Z and 14MZ you will get 14 channels (12+2) without adding a module, but if you add a module/decoder (MPDX-1) just like you have to do to the DX18 to get the 18 channels I think, you will get 24 or 28 fully proportional channels.

Sorry about the FPS (I did mean ms). The No back Light i wouldn't say is an issue, but what are the run times on DX18 vs 12Z (with standard battery's). I really dont like the scroller on the Dx18 that is a big turn off. I know its the feeling in your hands but i would like a decent spec radio (not one that is $20 and feels great).

Thank you for all the feed back.

So the DX18 will run 11ms on the main A/E/R/Aux1 what will the 12Z run 11ms on? any more channels or just the same ones?

The DX18 runs 18-20 hours on the stock battery.

From memory is is 7ms rather than 11ms and it covers channels 1-6.

Now, now, that's just being mean. Latency....latency......latency...... Well I would have bought the 12Z if I could have afforded it but I ended up with the Aurora 9. It feels VERY comfortable in my hands and I love it's touch screen and surprisingly easy programming. As far as the latency goes I guess it's really all about what you fly and if you are into heavy 3d anything. I'm not (only scale Warbirds) and the Aurora is just fine. Granted tho, I don't think you can realistically compare the 12Z to the Aurora. The 12Z is in another class.
