EAM's Pop-Fly "Issues and Answers"

Hi,

I am ready to fly my new Pop-Fly from EAM but have several unanswered questions. As you may know, the design is in a pre-release state and some information is not available on either the Web site or instructions.

I believe that I built mine stock per the instructions. My Pop-Fly is RTF at 8.9oz. This includes the custom 1.1oz weight under the tray nose and a 2.2oz, 8-cell, 300mAh NiMH pack. I am using a GWS direct drive motor with a GWS 3x2 prop. A GWS R4-P receiver and 2 HS-55 servos.

My CG was way off initially. It was suppose to be 5" but was 6". I removed the tray and cut the foam to move it as far forward as possible until the plastic tray nose was equal with the foam nose. I also cut 1/4" off the back of each elevon.

The CG is still at 5.25" with the weight.

Here are my questions:[list=1][*]What should the stock RTF weight be?[*]Are we suppose to use the supplied custom nose weight?[*]How did Gary balance his Pop-Fly without the weight?[*]At 9oz RTF, will this really fly with a direct drive GWS motor?[/list=1]

Popfly mods

My Popfly needed the weight because I used cheep batteries. But even with the added weight it flies good. Believe it or not I prefer going to cruise mode ( 1/2 power ) after I get a little altitude. That's when it's most graceful. Mine weighed in at 8 oz., the extra weight helps when there is a little wind. Gary balanced his Popfly by getting smaller more efficient batteries and mounted it all the way up front. he also ditched as much weight as he could aft of the cg. meat tray material replaced the balsa control surfaces and fins, he also reduced the size of the push pull wires. Note that small tubes were used to support the smaller wire where it gets close to the wing. I don't know how his Popfly performs on a day with wind but in the gym he steels the show......A truly gifted person. Seeking of...............I love your choice of colors. If you dig a spot under the battery tray, as close to the servos as you can and ditch the packing tape I'll bet you could shave off some of the lead. As for me, I have already ordered the battery pack from EAM that Gary has in his Popfly for mine. I'll soon be shaving lead.

Great looking plane, Greg! I'm gonna have to learn how to cover one of these days.

I built mine pretty much completely stock except I used meat tray winglets. I'm using a 1.4 oz Neopoint 1000 lithium pack. My RTF weight is exactly 6 oz. It balances at about 5.5" at this weight. I've flown mine with and without the weight in the front. It's definitely a lot more stable with the weight but it flies wonderfully without it. My only complaint is that it's a bit underpowered with the Puma motor on it and it tends to porpoise at times. But it rolls, loops, and flies inverted exceptionally. It will almost do an outside loop but not quite.

I'm planning on making a three-cell Neopoint pack. I think this will work really well with that Puma motor. The balance should be much better with the extra .7 oz in front and I'm hoping the power will be much better as well.

Thanks guys.

I will try replacing the plastic wingtips with some "meat tray" or Depron foam pieces.

I am trying to understand why I am 3oz higher in weight than some of your posted 6oz wings.

1.1oz is in the additional metal weight needed for CG. I wonder if my 8-cell 300mAh pack will still fit if it is folded over.

I would like Dave at EAM to post his initial design specs. like component positioning, cell size, and RTF weight.

I don't have a pop fly, but just finish a custom 34" Zagi that is 9.6 oz with GWS A motor and 9x7 prop and flys ok.

You might consider using different servos. Try the GWS Pico sevos at ~ .2 oz each. They appear to be forward of the CG though, so it won't help your balance.

How did you attach the elevons? If your using hinge tape it can be heavy. Ty the depron elevons , I'm using them on the plane mentioned above. Instead of depron winglets I used very thin platic from a for sale sign you can get at any hardware store. I'm not sure which is lighter, but I'll look into it.

I sure have been having great luck with the GWS A and 9x6 CAM SLIM prop and or the APC 10 X 7E props. They both seem to really perform quite well under flight loads with the 220 x8 cell NiMH packs. I also have been VERY satisfied with the ARC-1 prop at 7 pitch. This is even more preferable then the other three props because of it's low weight and because you can quickly and easily change the pitch if desired. A low weight prop is always more desirable because of it's low inertia which allows it to accelerate much more quickly then props that are heavy. The response time to full throttle is cut way down there fore making your slowflyer react much quicker to throttle in-puts. Pusher props (left hand) and or (right hand) can be made in a heart beat too. This is great for twins that want to run counter rotating props.
We now have 3mm hubs and will be building ARC-1 props just for the GWS motors.

For the new ARC-1A that will work on the GWS A or EPU-6 it will be about 7.3 pitch. It is so easily chaged you can even custom order your desired pitch.

Can somone please tell me what it is like to fly a wing. I am trying to decide which wing would be best, the pop fly or the Razor. If somone could compare the two wings that would help
I also need a wing that will survive the crashes

Which Razor are you refering to? The FMA Razor comes in many many versions, and the Trick Razor is a go fast plane. Both seem like they would be far different than the Pop-Fly.

Flying a wing is similar to flying a plane with ailerons. It is very agile and aerobatic. Once you master a rugged wing like the Zagi or FMA Razor, you'll be ready for a 4-channel ship (or Pop-Fly).

The Pop-Fly is a light and delicate slow-flyer made from EPS foam not a rugged EPP-foam leading edge wing like a Zagi. I would save the Pop-Fly for when you are comfortable flying wings and appreciate that there are 28.35 grams per ounce.

Pop Fly

I weighed mine today just before I went to go fly with Jason and Gary, 8.3 ozs with plastic winglets and 7x280 Nimh, Flies great !!! I haven't mastered catching as gracefully as Gary does but Ahm Gettin there !!! We have made some furthur revisions to the kit to knock some weight off, we now include mylar tape instead of the Vinyl to attach the elevons and the Canopy Tray as well as depron winglets

I was really excited about the Pop-Fly. I almost orderd one today! Which would be a better choice, the Zagi Or the Razor. I want a wing that I dont have to take to the field to fly, One that will fly slow and make sharp turns. and of course one that will survive Me. Is there really that big of difference between EPP and EPS foam?> What do they stand for?

At work We use a white 2"x1'X8' foam to build homes. First the foam is stacked up to build the walls, Much like putting together Legos. Then the foam is pumped with concrete. It works out to be about a R22 with the concrete. You can almost heat your house with a lightbulb
