OS 46 VX-M Dry Run

Hi guys,

newbie, nonetheless have come into possession of an OS 46 VX-M.

am in the process of setting up a dry dock (with water supply) to get the engine going. I am trying to think of the best solution to provide load to the engine as i don't want to run it without. just a regular airplane prop? will the recommended prop for an aircraft engine of the same size be suitable loading for a marine? should i look into a weighted flywheel? Can i tune the engine properly in this circumstance?

surely plenty of people have been through this before.

thanks in advance,
gus.

Welcome to RCG, it would be difficult to mount an airplane prop on that engine since the exhaust is facing toward the back and the OS 46 VX-M do requires a tuned pipe to run. ABC or ABN engines do not requires breaking in like a ringed or lapped engine, running them too cold or too rich will destroy the piston/sleeve fit in no time and its almost impossible to get spares for OS engines. The best way to run a marine engine is in a boat!

Looking at the thread title, I was wondering how one could put a boat through a "dry run"---.

We used to run airplane props on them to break them in.

It is not easy to mount an airplane prop on an OS 46 VX-M as it is set up to use a flywheel+collet without a prop driver unless ones have the missing parts!

Ok, thanks. I guess it all helps. I have watched several vids of marine engines running dry and without load and was just thinking there must be better way.

To the drawing board...
