Exceed RC Rocket Series 2205-1500 (30g, ~1510Kv)
Daniel Miller kindly lent me a couple of motors to test for him. The second is the Exceed Rocket Series 86MA50 2205-1500 (~1560Kv). This motor weighed in at 32g with its built-in prop saver and attached X-mount.
Using my usual bag of tricks for bench testing (Zurich Power Supply; Thrust Stand with Ohaus CS2000 digital scale; Eagle Tree v4 with Power Panel display, RPM and Temperature probes; Medusa Power Analyzer Plus; Hobbico Digital Tach; Gobrushless Servo Tester instead of a Tx; and for this test a Motrolfly 10A ESC) I ran no-loads at 7v, 8v, 10v, then a series of prop tests with props ranging from 6x3 GWS HD up to 9x5 GWS HD.
Using data from the no-load and prop tests, DriveCalc computed a Kv of ~1510Kv, and an Rm of 0.463Ω. Maximum efficiency was 76.7% @ 3A, and 60% at the computed maximum of 8.7A. [The Exceed specs suggested 12A/90W maximum]. The motor ran very smoothly throughout the testing, and heating only became an issue when the larger props were tested. The basic “rule of thumb” of 3W/g for power handling ability suggests that 90W would be a prudent maximum. For 3s use only the 6x3 GWS HD and 7x3.5 GWS HD can be considered suitable, since anything larger (8x4 GWS HD and 8x4.3 GWS RS) generated worryingly high temperatures. “RPM as a % of Kv x V” is a telling parameter… ideally around 70% is the acceptable minimum… and for this motor, all the larger props fell way short. The 8x4 GWS HD might just be suitable for 2s use (68%), but not for 3s use, since 60% and elevated temperature indicate over-loading. “RPM as a % of Kv x V” of 63% on 2s and 54% on 3s (allied with a temperature of 68°C after the series of bursts to WOT) indicates that an 8x4.3 GWS RS is too much for it. Neither of the 9” props tried at 2s voltages produced acceptable RPM numbers.

I just tried the 2205-1400kv version. I have to say it is a turd. I bought it to replace a Turnigy "Donkey" 2204-1550 (came on a used foamy) as it was weak also. Zero improvement and will not spin a prop like a blue wonder. Smooth running nice motor, just wrong for a 3d foamy.
