If you guys wanted to do both islands, you will need a bit of time. NZ has a lot to see in a short distance. Don't rush yourself

The campervan idea works well

If anyone's passing thru Auckland I'm sure us locals here will be able to organize some entertainment, be it flying or other. We've got a bunch of slope sites, some of which are pretty special (e.g. Maori Bay), and a few DS sites very close by as well (nothing like down south, but fun with smaller stuff, and with much less distance to drive).

If you're heading down south from Auckland I can recommend a detour out to the coast to fly at Raglan or Ruapuke - I'm sure some of the Hamilton guys would join you. Could of camp grounds and also more upmarket accommodation there to stay a night too.

I'd say Christchurch due to most of the hills are nearer to ChCh.
Tekapo is a fair hike.

All depends on the wind direction we get. I will be just following the wind. That's what happened in Cali. We would drive 3 hrs to get to a hill with the right direction.

Yep, what Asto said. ChCh had more sites for any wind.

If a good forecast arises for Tekapo, we will all road trip down there. Only 2 1/2 hour drive at normal speed, or with aids and driving at Spencer-speed, 1 hour 45min hehe

Good luck finding a place in Christchurch, there's still a rental shortage following the quake. Ashburton may be better, an hour south of Chch but an hour closer to tekapo. Beds at my place of course, 1/2 hour before Tekapo.

That would be great Alex. If a house is organised I 'll book the big 4WD in a couple of days.
should be good for 3 blokes.
Just be aware my plane quiver is large. When we go on our ds expaditions in the white elephant Ezza doesn't have any room for his planes.ha ha
Can you pm me your phone number Alex.

Asto

No worries Asto.

The more planes, the better. You alone will probably quadruple ChCh's DS quiver.

To get work's holiday home at that time of year would mean having to enter a Ballot along with everyone else that wanted it, and I would also have to be there the whole time (part of the rules. Best bet would be getting it for a short period of time, around when most people will be there. It is a 5 bedroom place with ability to comfortably sleep 10 people.

I will email back and ask about a weeks rental (price is $50NZ a night!) for about Dec 6-12th
