There may be a NW or two around then. There were a few good NWs last Dec and Jan. More NE predominant though. Worst case, there will be a 25-30mph NW there one day. GOod for getting up near 300. Best case there will be what we got there last Thursday. 70mph NW

Some videos from Jan this year:

Sugarloaf DS, Jan 2nd (5 min 0 sec)

Jan 15th Alpine DS (0 min 30 sec)
30mph NW on the flat this day

Canterbury Nor Wester (1 min 8 sec)

That is a really great summary. So is it true to say it's not often that you get the NW you need for Tekapo?

Over the last 2 week's I've been watching the wind at mt John , and doing a lot of searching on why?? The wind in the vally blows NW or WNW a lot.

I stumbled across a few very interesting articles , and studies that have been done , about the ALPINE VALLY flow.
I've got into contact via email with a couple of NZ weather guys , also joined a forum and searched.
They gave me some links , and info , also Alan email me FULL wind history for lake tekapo. From 1967 to 1980...

The whole tekapo vally continually blows for the wnw or around that 290deg mark , because of the shape of the alpine vally. Both told me that, even if the wind on the western side is a different direction , as the wind pushes over the hill , gets cooled , and because of the pressure drop it fall down the other side , and gravity pushes it... Resulting in high winds.
And because of the vally shape is makes it's own wind weather....

Quote....Alan..

Most of our gales come from the west.  The really severe gales are from 290
degrees azimuth, WNW.  That is normal (right angles) to the Southern Alps.  The pressure drop caused by the mountains makes the local wind run at 290 degrees regardless of the 'global' wind direction

I'll post the data up soon.
Winter is the only time the wind slows down. It needs that temp change to work well. Yes the data is old... I do have up to date stat's as well.

Little stat for you.

Average days per year over 63kph. =. 153 days
96kph. = 68 days

Great find Alex.......Great hill with constant wind.

Tim

DUDE! Thanks a heap for that info! That is awesome! You are a Internet Search Wizard!

Yes, we will will get a NW day at Tekapo for the INT. DS Week. As previously mentioned, my guess best day would be 25kts at worst case over the two week period most will be here in DEC
