Contact flying vid inspired by Manuel Nubel

Hope you enjoy a vid that we made of our Homebrew Foamy.

After seeing Manuel Nubel's Ultimate flight in Indoor/Micro we had to shoot some contact flying footage.

Very nice flying Darren... when are we going to see vids of the Rev3? When are we going to see you flying in your house? Your living room is plenty big. Catch ya later, I gotta shovel snow.

It's a Razor 350/Phoenix 25 in a D gearbox running a 12x6 on 3 cell E-Tecs. (Nothing surprising there

AUW is 11.2 oz. (with the repairs so it hovers at half throttle. Run time is as you'd expect, about 15-20 mintues depending on how rowdy you get.

Very, very cool! Do you have any plans to kit that or sell plans at least? She looks rock solid in the hover.

Mr. Hunter-

my friend and i have toyed with the idea of kitting it but we're a bit befuddled about material sourcing and mass production techniques that would be reasonable in price, time requirements, and quality. In the mean time we're getting some plans together that we'd offer for little to no cost just to share this (in my opinion) great little foamy.

As far as solid in hover; in 15+ years i've never had or even flown such an honest hovering machine. You notice you can come way off axis and still correct it. Also, as you're transitioning in and out of hover to harrier flight, it holds on tenaciously and is a seemless transition from thrust flight to lift flight and ANYWHERE in between. The 3.9 oz wing loading doesn't hurt! We call it our 3D Hover Trainer since everything happens in a more manageable timeframe and it has no "cliff" in the flight envelope. We also came up with a bit of a risque' nickname i can share with you privately if you wish

i'm glad to be part of the electric revolution!

my freind and i had taken note of the Sukhoi this spring and wanted to adapt it to something that was flyable on an economical powertrain; i.e. the GWS motor/gearbox. (It flies great with the stock GWS, but as everyone knows, lifetime is an issue on 3 cells.) The Morris Hobbies series were also a source for "proof of concept" design.

Paul Susbauer loaned us a Razor one night and we were hooked. The rest, as they say, is history... (Thank you Paul!)

Cool, I made a Fan fold version of the Sukhoi for my razor 2500 and it does well.

What is the wingspan of your version? Also what made you decide to do a built up rudder?

Is the wing also built up? It is hard to tell from the video if it has airfoil or if that is just from the CF tube spar

Thanks

Span is 33". The Hershey bar wing does great. The airfoil was borrowed from an early (1980s) fun-fly design by Steve Cook called the Pirate. (i met Steve in Spokane while i was going to school in the early 90s. Great pilot.) The "built-up" rudder is just a cut-out truss afair from a single piece to reduce weight (and experiment with Solite. This was our second revision of the model.) The wing's just over an inch thick and used a classic built up structure replicated in foam. Rigidity of the spars was enhanded by laminating .026 carbon rods down their length. Our newest rev does away with that tedious process and we hope our monolithic spar will prove functional and durable.

Darude!!!! i love that album! That's my and my freinds favorite dance song. Anytime they played it downtown EVERYBODY got up and danced. i'm only sorry the quality wasn't better in the video... Feel the Beat has a great rythm too, great to fly to! Next project will be some Fatboy Slim.

Ron and i will try to get some plans together... (work and home life keeps us busy.) Maybe we can get Paul to help us...
