Build Log
"Cargo" Prototype

I have recently started designing a plane that resembles a cargo transport, although technically it is not modeled after anything. I figure this is as good a place as anywhere to post it

It's going to be a high winged built up plane, about four by three feet. I've already decided a 4415 for the airfoil. Weight should be under 2kg. I will place a single engine on the front (I know, it will look funny) as I have no experience with EDF and I don't want to pay for 2 engines. Ill go anywhere from 4 to six channels (Flaps, Brake) depending on the cost. I'm a bit dry on money now, so I'll just sit back and design for now.

I'm a noob so if you have any suggestions or concerns, throw them out. I will definitely need LOTS of help, so thanks in advance guys!

This afternoon I will design the horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and compile a list of what I need to design before I can order the balsa. By the way, this will be my third plane and first scratchbuild.

I calculated the lift force for...
1.4 CL (about the max I can get with the airfoil)
300in^2 surface area (about 15in by 10in per wing)
30 MPH (target cruise speed)

...it came out to 1.9878 KG of lift force, right on target. Hopefully my wing will be a bit bigger than that, though, and the plane will be a bit lighter.

I got the stabilizers done, however I need to go back a step and lighten up. I think that it will be a bit heavy as is, and I am having problems finding 8" wide balsa sheets.

Solution: Remove some of the 1/2" diameter sticks and use depron with some balsa for the ribs. Will this present problems for wrapping it? What do you guys think?

i think you have to examine what the purpose is. the stab section is not subject a whole lot of stress. in fact, its only function is to keep the tail from pitchin up or down too much. ive crashed more planes than i can remember, and in every on the tail was fine.

so, build the tail as light as possible. if your going for pure function (ugly), use a 4 X 36 inch sheet of balsa weighing less that 35 grams. cut it into 1/8 inch sticks and built a stick and tissue stab. cover with esaki tissue.

or try some 1mm depron. glue 1mm CF rods to add strength and add a second layer of 1mm depron on top of the CF. better than the stick and tissue method as its eaiser.

just my .02,. got any pics? would love to see them.

Actually, I was planning to do the stab section with just flat balsa. I was reffering to the dowells inside the fuselage being too heavy, thinking of taking some of those out. I am having trouble finding balsa sheets big enough to make the body ribs, should I make those out of ply, depron, or blucore?

Obviously the pics are still just from Draftsight. Thanks guys!

Okay, ill keep that in mind when I build the ribs. Thanks!

I have no experience choosing or mounting engines. How much does an average engine weigh? What kind of engine do I need? How do I mount it and what ESC and LiPo do i need to go with it?

How many KV would an engine be to be large enough to get 1.5-2.5 KG in the air? Sorry if its a stupid question i have no experience with engines. Answer? Please?
