Question
T-Rex 450 Clones? Where to begin?

Good-day to all. New to the Heli world, but really digging it! My question is there are A LOT of t-rex clones, but where to begin? I'm sure some clones are better then others correct? I know I would like 450 size as I have several 3s 2200 batteries I wish to use and flybarless also I would also like. Right now I think the 450 would be a good size to start with.

So what:
Frame?
Gyro?
Servos?
Motors?
Anything else I'm missing?

* Never put a heli kit together before so I just plan on reading and watching youtube videos.

* Any of these HK kits any good? Bunch of different 450 types but I have no clue what the difference are. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...&v=&sortlist=P

* Is it possible to piece together a half decent heli using mostly parts from HK to just order all at once? I know some HK stuff is half decent, but other stuff is buyer beware. I just wanna make sure I build something decent. Everything doesn't have to be from HK, just not trying to order for a crap load of different places. A few OK, but you guys get the point. Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the tarot 450. A couple on here and what I read elsewhere shows it is a nice kit and on par with the align trex 450. Suppose to be a nice bird. Havn't heard much good of the hobbykings clone if that is what your looking for.
Gyros? Depends if your going FB or FBL. 3gx is one for fbl as well as the beastx which people like better than most others. for FB heads, the gy401 is a decent one but believe the Align GP780 and 790 are the better of the two. If your going FBL then you are going to have to go Digital on your cyclics. Align ds4XX series is ok, EXI D213F digital metal gear servos are ok, Futaba, JR and Hitec all make decent digital micro servos as well. Get what you can get on your dollar. For the tail you can use a number of tail servos. futaba, JR, Hitec EXI and others all make decent tail servos.
Motor and ESC, would not go less than 40 amp esc with a 5 amp bec combo. Or put on a align 430L or similar. Scorpion makes nice motors and ESC combo's. anywhere from 3200kv to 4400kv brushless. AM sure people can chime in as to what is better to get and what to stay away from. I fly the storm 450 3g fbl heli. One uses the storm motor and esc and the other one I have RCX motor and ESC and both of them havnt given me any issues at all. Strong motor/ESC combos and do the job without issues.

The Tarots look really nice, just a tad more then I was hoping to spend on a frame. For esc's I always try and buy Hobbywing esc's. I love them in my cars, planes and boats and am huge fan. Exi servo's I've used in my boats before and they work good and a good price also. Normally in my planes though I use Hitec servo's, just don't want to fit the bill for some digital hitecs lol. On a budget if you can't tell.. Trying to keep it somewhat resonable, towards the end of the year I should have more money to spend. Dang medical bills are cutting into my RC budge + I'm really big into planes and boats so trying to spilt the budget 3 ways is starting to get difficult .

Spoted this motor http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...er_3550KV.html pretty sure it's a Suppo outrunner and I've had really good luck with them before in boats, just not sure if anyone ever used them in a Heli with good luck. If something happens in a boat it just stops, but in a plane or heli if something happens normally it results in lots of $$ falling out of the sky rather quickly, trying to avoid that lol.... Read a lot of good reviews on the Beast X and I would like to buy the 450x, but I want to build something a little cheaper first to practice on and not be afraid about breaking something pricey. That's really the main goal for this build, something I can keep in the air rather cheaply and gain the experience to move up to nicer helis. I would like to own an actual T-Rex one day. I have a 120sr and the mcpx is what I've been practicing different manuevers on to date.

Anyone try the Solar Servos? http://www.hobbypartz.com/solar.html

Thank you for your post buy the way, and the Storm Heli's look really nice. Are they compatiable with any Align parts? Did you order from Helipal? http://www.helipal.com/storm-450-3g-...-bone-kit.html

Hmmm

Get on ebay , try Trex 450 for a search :

For around $50 you should see the all metal carbon clones [ a good place to start ]
I have the cheapest kit ive seen on order , $21.50 [ but its plastic so you take your chances ]

HXT900 servos are ok
Gyro ? 401 or clone should work fine
40A ESC [ make sure its 40A ]

Noobs generally speaking kill 450 parts , so I personally want to kill cheap parts .

What you may kill = Servo's , control arms , Main shaft for head , feathering shafts , rotor blades , main drive gear , thats the short list ..

Did a ebay search and came up with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Shipping...item4165abea3a after some reading and question answering it's better if I went with a belt drive tail. Is this kit any good? and thinking about adding this as with it. http://www.oomodel.com/tarot-zyx-zyx...d-p-61907.html

You say you are new to Helis .....
Forget the Flybarless 450 Pro and start with a 450 sport with flybar .

The one you found on Ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Shipping...item4165abea3a ...

looks like the Alzrc 450 sports
http://www.rc711.com/shop/alzrc-450-...th=165_273_274

Have a look at Finless Bob's Helifreak Tech Room on http://www.helifreak.com

http://www.helifreak.com/forumdisplay.php?f=60

It will help you with Heli Builds and alot of top tips as well
Good luck . I hope you like flying Helis

+1 on teh starting with the flybar heli's. FBL heli's can be extremely difficult and a long learning curve

This build has come in at $146.50 so far with Tx ....

Kit $28 [ all prices shipped ] 1st fiber kit , not the $21.50 (2nd bite of the apple)
Tx $53 [ Computer Tx - stand alone - no PC ]
Motor $15
Head $15.60
Gyro $12.90
ESC $10
Servos $10-$12

Less Tx-Rx
$93.50
But I think $146.50 with a computer Tx is just

Thanks guys. No tx/rx needed, going to use my dx8 and a HK orange 6ch or ar600 if i need to. That alz450 looks awesome. I think I need belt drive though and that was a tt. I think I'm going to go with the 1 kit for $50 and $19 shipped here in the states. Couple of you guys mentioned that was a good find. Hopefully still in stock when I get paid. Hate to have that one slip away.

Just a quick question on why stick with flybar instead of fbl. Do all flybar helis tend to be more "self-righting"? Reason I ask that is my 120sr (flybar) is extremely self-righting while my mcpx (fbl) has 0 self-righting tendencies.

My front runner is the ebay frame I listed earlier: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Shipping...ht_4897wt_1110
if that slips away my back-up frame, will be the HK450gt pro: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...x_Compat_.html

Motor I'm looking at this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idproduct=9021

On the right path so far? The possibilities really seem endless, so I'm trying to start narrowing my choices down so I can make a solid choice, but still have a back up. I registered for helifreak a few weeks ago and will check out the recommended threads of finless bob.

So if I go flybarless I was looking at this: http://www.oomodel.com/tarot-zyx-zyx...d-p-61907.html

If I go with the flybar setup what is recommended?

FBL Heli's can be good. My storm is fbl and flies like a dream. I just set up my trex 500 to fbl and all was good till the 5th or 6th battery pack and all heck broke loose. The thing went nuts on me and still dont know why yet. I was going to change it back to fb but I am going to try to give it another shot at FBL. Going to be running out of spare parts soon though if it messes up again. I wish I knew what happened. It was flying ok then as I said it went totally out of control. I am going to have to do some math on current draw for all the servos, rx and 3gx controller. FBL heli's uses less parts and less moving parts means less drag so you get more flying time on each pack. If your new to heli's and plan on setting the fbl system up yourself it might not be a good starting point. Flybar heli's are easier to set up and less complicated. As I said my storm 450 3g is flybarless and love the way it handles. I really never got the trex 500 to fly as good or as smooth as the storm so maybe I screwed something up in the setup or programming.
