I was under the impression both had died; I am truly amazed one is still going. A testament to both product and engineering as well as resource management here with the control team. Bravo.

Spirit expired a couple of years ago-- she got stuck in loose sand and was not able to get out and go to a safe haven for the Winter. Winter hit and there was not enough sunlight on the solar panels and could generate enough power for the batteries and electronics. The orbot shut down and was not able to be revived.

Opportunity has completed a 21 mile journey to the rim of a large crater. She got to a slope with a northward tilt, which was optimum for the solar panel output, and on a hilltop so that breezes could help keep the dust from accumulating on the solar panels. Oppy spent the Winter in a low-power mode doing science.

It's been a miraculous eight years. Astoundingly so, since the vehicles were designed and certified to operate only for 90 days.

No doubt Germany and German companies buy stuff in/from the USA, probably, I think, maybe.

Pretty darn impressive that a system like that could continue to function in such a harsh environment without any maintenance.

Think of all that trickle down technology that will benefit us all. And some still want to see NASA go bye-bye.

I worked with a former NASA scientist who worked on this rover project. From what she told me they will likely never find any signs of life because they are looking for the wrong soil indicators. Aparently a PhD refused to admit he was wrong.

That's what they WANT you to believe.

NASA had the Opportunity rover do a drive-by of the Spirit rover to see what really was wrong with it. It seems that NASA parked the Spirit rover overnight in a bad section of Mars, and the last they saw of it it was up on blocks with the 39 motors stripped out of it. It seems the Martians needed the motors for a lowrider project they were working on.

Another government fail; they make rovers to work for 90 days, and what happens? They keep working on and on and on.

As government goes NASA is as close to good as it gets. They're not perfect but who is?

Which soil indicators do you believe they are not looking for, which they should be looking for, in order to find any signs of life?
