I have a Flyline Models Fairchild 22 waiting to be built soon.
The recommended engine is 09-15 with a flying weight of 2-3lbs. I was planing to put an Enya 09 in it but I've been wondering if I could get away with a Queen Bee 074 or preferably one of my various 061's.
I'll build it light and with lightweight radio gear I don't see why if I keep it to around 30-40oz all up (maybe less) with engine and radio that an 061 with a 7" prop would be enough for it?

I don't think it needs the weight of an 09 to balance it, looking at the plans the nose is fairly long and I'll move the radio forward and keep the tail light.
What does everyone think about that?

Only one I ever saw fly was fitted with a 15, it wasn't a floater model type flight.
But that was 30+ years ago and my memory can be suspect.

If you can keep the weight to around 27 ounces or less, that Enya .09 should be fine for it. If it's going over 30 ounces, I'd consider a .15. But if you're going to be closer to 24 ounces (and no real balance issues), then possibly a Norvel .074 would be a good choice since it has close to the power of the Enya .09.

Also consider your balance. With the Enya .09 will you need to add nose weight? If so, then the .15 may be the better option. It'll give you more power with the weight, and that will be better adding lead to the short nose.

Another thing to consider is the propsize. While the Norvel .074 is a great engine it doesn't like any larger than a 7x3 prop. The enya on the other hand will happily swing 7x4-8x4 props.

The Queen Bee will at best swing a 6x3-6x4 prop, and is weaker than a Norvel .061...

Thanks for all the input. I've heard that the Queen Bee isn't the greatest, and it seems as though an 061 won't be enough. I think I'll wait until the build is well progressed to weigh it up - will probably go with my Enya 09, it's a great engine.

I built my Petite Parasol with an old Enya 09 III and just could not believe the power and climb it had. It was not over the top, just much better than I expected. And that was with an 8x4. It had a 42 inch span and weighed 27 oz, which I was quite proud of. The original in the magazine article weighed 33 oz with an old escapement single channel.

I would go with the Enya .09. The 8 inch prop with look better, and it's a little bigger airplane than mine was, so I think the power would be good. You might regret a small high revving engine. Plus the Enya 09 sounds so great on idle coming in for touch and goes.

Buzzard bait, I looked up your build on the other channel, very nice indeed.
I feel like keeping the Fairchild 22 kit in the box and ordering the Petit Parasol plans instead! But it's such a classic, gotta love those Flyline kits.

Thanks Mr Cosmo, and yes, Andrew has it right. MAN still carried the plan last time I looked, not too long ago. I saved that magazine from when I bought it at a news shop in 1966, and finally built it about 40 years later. Good grief, I'd better build faster or I won't get 'em all done!

You did a really nice job on the struts. Those all wire setups are hard to get aligned and hold in place for soldering. I think wrapping with copper wire is the only way to go.

I really liked the blue and white scheme you used. You should post some more pics of your plane from the RCU thread.
